Spartan’s Defense Holds Strong in 1-0 Shutout Over Elon

ELON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team secured its first road win and second-straight shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over non-conference opponent Elon University Sunday night at Rudd Field.

By the Numbers
  • UNCG saw senior Nicole Souply score the game-winning goal, as classmate Gracie Timbario assisted on the tally.
  • Senior goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper earned her second shutout of the season registering five saves.  
  • Elon saw McKenna Dalfonso with three saves.
  • The Spartans totaled 10 shots and two corner kicks, while the Phoenix took 17 shots and 10 corner kicks.
  • This is UNCG's second-straight win over Elon, now holding an overall record of 16-1-3, including a 7-0-1 mark at the Phoenix pitch.
  • With the shutout, this is the first time since 2016 where the Spartans have started the season with back-to-back clean sheets.
How it Happened:
  • Thirty seconds into the game, Elon's Isabelle Paradoski took a chance on net, but her shot was just off target. Possession was reversed and UNCG's Caroline Woods recorded the team's first shot on goal at 1:07.
  • Under the cotton candy sky, Timbario, who was charging forward down the center of the field, crossed the ball to Souply, who found the back of the net at 17:36 with her left foot, for a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Phoenix looked to fight back, as they took five shots in the remaining minutes of the half, including a direct shot at the crossbar in the 39th minute.
  • UNCG's Rachel Rouse sent a ball wide left after the Spartans earned a free kick right outside the 18-yard box just before the 48th minute of the game.
  • The Phoenix laid on more pressure in the second half and saw a lot more offensive opportunities, outshooting the Spartans, 9-5.

    • "This was our first test on the road. It was our first goal of the season, so that was incredibly exciting. It was an amazing feeling to score and celebrate with the team, so that is something we are really going to build off of."

    • "Huge shoutout to our defense. They did amazing and this was a huge breakthrough for our defense to really gain confidence, and this makes us really excited for the rest of the season."
    On the Senior Class
    • "It is so nice having a big senior class and there are so many points of view and leadership styles. I think as a senior class, we do a great job of checking in with each other, talking problems out, and meeting with the team. I love leading with these seniors, They are a great group of girls."
    On Playing this Season
    • "Playing a regular season is so nice, following last year, and it is such a relief to play these non-conference games to really build off of and get into conference play."

    UNCG takes on George Washington University to face their third of eight non-conference opponents this season on Thursday, August 26 with a 5:30 p.m. start time at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
