Sisters On and Off the Court

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three years.

That's how long it took for sisters Brittany and Bri Wood to play against each other in their college careers.

Brittany, a junior outside hitter for UNC Greensboro, and Bri, a fifth-year senior right side for East Carolina.

For their parents, it was an emotional night. Their mom in an ECU shirt and UNCG hat, while their dad wore an UNCG shirt with an ECU hat.

"My parents thought it was emotional, exciting, and also gut-wrenching to watch us play against each other," said Brittany.  "They've been looking forward to this for a while and felt so happy and proud to see us finally compete."

But for the sisters, it was a long time coming.

"It felt good to finally be able to play against my sister," said Brittany. "I honestly never thought it would happen, so the fact that it did on her last year of playing was great. It's something the both of us have been looking forward to and now can have the memory of it to last."

Bri has been an inspiration for Brittany growing up. Since Bri is older, she introduced Brittany to the sport, so she had someone to play with at home.

"Bri has been a huge inspiration for me in playing volleyball," said Brittany. "She introduced the sport to me when I was younger by teaching me the basics so that I could play with her at home. I was able to watch her develop a love for the game over the years and was lucky enough to play with her for 3 years where I could continue to grow as a player with her. Her passion for the game and all the hard work she puts in still inspires me today."

The sisters are close and talk all the time. Leading up to the match, they talked about the basics.

"What time are you getting here?"

"Are you able to play?"

Brittany was just coming off an injury so her ability to play against her sister was a last-minute decision.

The support for each other lasts throughout the whole season. Brittany will drive the  two and a half hours to watch her sister play on Sunday's.

"Throughout our seasons we support each other by keeping up with each other's team's social media to see how we're both doing, said Brittany.  "Since she plays Fridays and Sundays, I normally drive down to watch her play on Sundays since that's our day off."
