GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team continues its eight-game non-conference slate with a match against George Washington University on Thursday, August 25 with a 5:30 p.m. start time at GW Soccer Stadium in Washington, D.C.

ABOUT THE SPARTANS
  • Ashley Avelino, a 2020-21 All-SoCon second team selection, Maddy Gilhool, and Caroline Woods return for UNCG, as they led the 2020-21 squad with two goals apiece. 
  • Head Coach Michael Coll welcomes seven newcomers to the field in Makenna NunezJill GinnChloe LausellRachel PoplinMel HerreraAlly Hackett, and Laura Aalmans, while 10 seniors lead the way aiming to get the program back to where it was in 2019. 
  • Prior to the 2020-21 season, the Spartans saw three-straight seasons of 10-plus wins, including the program's 10th and 11th trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and 2018. 
  • Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper returns in net, as she was second in the Southern Conference with a .872 save percentage and four shutouts, and third with a 0.65 goals against average. 
  • Senior Kayla Campbell was the lone Spartan to be named to the 2020-21 Preseason All-SoCon team. She led all defenders in 2019 with five goals, while being a force on the back line helping UNCG to six clean sheets. 
SPARTANS' LAST TIME OUT
  • UNCG secured its first road win and second-straight shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over non-conference opponent Elon University Sunday night at Rudd Field.
  • The Spartans saw senior Nicole Souply score the game-winning goal, as classmate Gracie Timbario assisted on the tally.
  • UNCG totaled 10 shots and two corner kicks, while the Phoenix took 18 shots and 10 corner kicks.
TYLER-COOPER – DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
  • The senior goalkeeper set the bar high, earning Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors after the first week of play.
  • This was her third honor of her career, second as Defensive Player of the Week, since the Conference started announcing them in 2019.
  • She played every minute in goal this week, as UNCG went 1-0-1, with a double overtime draw against High Point University and a 1-0 victory over Elon University.
  • Tyler-Cooper totaled 13 saves and earned her 19th and 20th career shutouts, moving her into fourth in school history.
ZERO IN THE BACK
  • With the 0-0 double overtime win against High Point University to open the season and a 1-0 road victory over Elon University, this is the first time since 2016 that the Spartans have earned back-to-back clean sheets.
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
  • The George Washington women's soccer team was selected to finish fourth out of 14 teams in the 2021 Atlantic 10 preseason poll.
  • Last season, junior Tori Minda was second on the team with two goals for four points, and senior Maria Pareja recorded a tally and a helper for three points.
  • Redshirt-junior Tamaki Machi returns in net for GW, as she allowed eight goals with a .819 goal against average and 44 saves. In 2019, she was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.
  • Head Coach Michelle Demko welcomed the addition of 11 student-athletes for the fall 2021 season. The group includes nine first-years and two graduate transfers.
  • During the 2020-21 season, GW posted a 6-4-1 mark overall and a 4-3-1 Atlantic 10 record.
GEORGE WASHINGTON'S LAST TIME OUT
  • A back-and-forth first half led way to a frenetic second half and overtime as GW women's soccer earned a draw with Patriot League preseason favorite Navy, 2-2, on Sunday afternoon.
  • Maria Pareja fed a beautiful cross from the right side to a waiting Kelly Amador who snuck behind the Navy defense and beat the keeper 1 v. 1 into the lower right corner in the 11th minute for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Buff & Blue quickly countered in the 33rd minute thanks to some nifty footwork on the touchline from Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky, who spun past her defender and set up Sammy Neyman for the tap-in and a 2-1 advantage.
  • Navy outshot George Washington, 23-17.
SERIES HISTORY
  • The last time the two teams met was September 21, 1991, when the Spartans defeated the Colonials, 2-1, at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
