WILMINGTON, N.C. – The 2021 UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team will go down in history as the best start to a season with a 3-0 (25-23,25-23, 25-18) win over the UNCW Seahawks on Saturday night. The Spartans improve to 11-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans jumped out to 11-7 lead behind points from Jocelyn Carter, Grey Breen, Gabriela McHugh, Brittany Wood, and Kayla White.
- The Seahawks fought back and came within one of the Spartans. Kayla White ended the set at 25-23.
- After battling an early deficit, the Spartans and Seahawks tied the second set at 12. A block from Breen would give the Spartans their first lead of the set.
- The second set was looking like the first, with both teams tied at 23. White and Breen scored the last two points of the set to give UNCG a 2-0 lead on the match.
- An ace from Gabriela McHugh would bring the Spartans lead to 8-4 over UNCW in the third set.
- The Seahawks came back and tied the set at 9, but the Spartans answered with a 5-0 run behind Amanda Garvens to lead 14-9.
- UNCG scored the last five of six points to complete the sweep and the best start in program history.
BY THE NUMBERS
- UNCG has completed the quest for the best start in program history with the win over UNCW. They improve to 11-2, the previous best was 10-3 in 1994.
- Gabriela McHugh now has 1,982 assists in her career. She dished out 33 against the Seahawks.
- For the second time today, Kayla White was the lone player to have double digit kills. She had a total of 16 against Wilmington.
- Jenna Wiggs led the team with 21 digs in the match. McHugh followed with 11.
- Senior Amanda Garvens served two aces, leading the Spartans.
- Brittany Wood, Grey Breen, White, and McHugh each had a solo block in the match. Breen led in total blocks with 3.

"We took some important steps today as a team, playing disciplined volleyball and keeping our composure through times of stress. I'm proud of the players. They have definitely earned the 11-2 start to the season and have a lot to be proud of. Carrying this momentum into conference play next weekend is the next step for us."
