GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball opened fall ball play on Sunday hosting Elon University and the University of South Carolina at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
 
The Spartans were victorious against the Phoenix, 13-2, and fell to the Gamecocks, 7-3.
 
Game 1: UNCG 13 - Elon 2

• In the bottom of the third, freshman Grace Loftin connected on a one-out double. Classmate Jessie Shipley followed with a walk and senior Delaney Cumbie loaded the bases, as she was hit by a pitch. Junior Maycin Brown sent out a long ball to center field putting four runs on the board for the Spartans.
• Sophomore Brooklynn Maxwell reached base on a single through the left side in the bottom of the fourth, and Loftin crushed a two-run homerun adding to UNCG's score.
• Cumbie kicked off the bottom of the fifth with a single to left field and soon after, the bases were loaded once again following a walk and a single. Cumbie scored on a sacrifice fly to left by graduate student Jordan Gontram.
• Senior Samantha Lagrama walked to load the bases and Blayke Batten drove them all in with the Spartans' second grand slam of the day.
• Junior Ashley Gontram reached on an error in the 7th inning and sophomore Anna White followed up with a 2-run homerun, for UNCG's 12^th and 13^th runs of the day.
• In the circle, freshman pitcher Reese Byrd saw her first start as a Spartan and threw five scoreless innings with six strikeouts, one walk, and gave up three hits.
• Junior Alex Rodriguez followed Byrd's performance with two solid innings of relief work.

Game 2: UNCG 3 – South Carolina 7

• Cumbie got the Spartans on the board first against the Gamecocks with a solo blast to left field in the bottom of the first.
• In the fifth inning, Cumbie connected again with a lead-off double and scored following back-to-back singles by Brown and senior Hannah Kincer, for UNCG's second run of the game.
• White crossed home for the Spartans' third run of the game in the seventh. Lagrama's single moved her over to third and then crossed home on a fielder's choice.
• Junior Morgan Scott got the start against the Gamecocks, throwing 5.1 innings with four strikeouts, one hit-by-pitch, and giving up six hits.
• Byrd came in relief for the Spartans, tossing 1.2 innings and giving up just three hits.
