GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fleming Gym erupted as the UNC Greensboro volleyball team finished a miraculous 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 15-10) comeback over the North Carolina Central Eagles Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles took a 16-12 lead in the first set. Gabriela McHugh led the Spartans with three kills, followed by Kayla White, Grey Breen, and Jocelyn Carter with two.
  • Despite UNCG's efforts, North Carolina Central would take a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • Junior Brittany Wood tied the second set at five.
  • The Eagles took a 15-9 lead, but a late run from the Spartans would give them the one-point lead. Grey Breen led the run with four kills.
  • The run by UNCG wasn't enough as North Carolina answered with a 5-0 run and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Spartans were down 5-10 in the middle of the third set. An error by the Eagles would kickstart an 11-1 run by UNCG to take a 15-11 run.
  • Both teams traded point back and forth to make the score 21-20 in favor of the Spartans.
  • Daija Jackson, America Anderson, and Kayla White scored four straight points to give UNCG the 25-20 win.
  • The Spartan's momentum carried into the fourth set, with UNCG taking a 19-8 lead.
  • Kayla White, Grey Breen, Taylor Robertson, Daija Jackson, Gabriela McHugh, Valeria Calderon all scored during the hot start.
  • White would force a fifth with a kill from McHugh.
  • A block assist from the freshman pair of Daija Jackson and America Anderson would give UNCG a 9-3 lead in the final set.
  • North Carolina Central made a push and came back to make it a one-point set. UNCG would go on a 4-0 run to complete the comeback and improve its record to 6-1.
COREY'S COURSE OF THOUGHT
Carlin the message to the team while being down 0-2
"The middle of the third set was the same message after being down early in set one. We did not come out ready to go. I have to credit Central. They played with a lot of good energy, and they came out fired up. We have to start better. The kids had their work cut out for them to turn it around."

Carlin on the second half of the match
"We really focused on our standard, our side of the net, and to be more assertive. If someone was really watching the first two sets, they saw a lot of off-speed from us. Our tempo was not consistent and that was something we focused on."

Carlin on America Anderson
"She was tremendous. That's a luxury this year and we embrace that we have a deep bench. It's something we haven't had in a few years because of injury. Her number was called tonight, and she stepped up. Before her, Grey Breen picked up her play in the first two sets and the last two sets. When you have multiple young ladies stepping up and making plays, you can steam roll off that."

UPCOMING
The Spartans will head to Fairfax, Va., for the George Mason Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Spartans will play Coppin State, Marist, and George Mason.
