GREENSBORO, N.C. – As the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team counts down the days until its first game of the 2022 season, 15 to be exact, we are excited to get to know the new faces on the team.
Today we highlight
Jessie Shipley and
Meredith Harwood.
Jessie Shipley | IF | Sugar Land, Texas
If you come from a small town, what attracted you to UNCG?
Coming from a small town, the great business program that is one of the best in North Carolina attracted me to UNCG. Athletically, the great winning culture and history of success with trips to the NCAA tournament was appealing.
What is your most interesting hobby and how did you get started? Do you have a favorite memory with the hobby?
My most interesting hobby is ping pong. My favorite memory with it is going undefeated among the freshmen in the residence halls. I started playing when we got a ping pong table at my house when I was younger, and we played it all the time.
Have you traveled internationally and where was it? What is your favorite memory from the trip?
I went on a cruise in 2018! My favorite memory from the trip was getting to ride on a speed boat where the captain was dressed as Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
What are you studying and why did you choose that major?
I'm studying business because there are a lot of jobs in that field so I can do a lot with a business degree. I am also interested in psychology.
Who is your softball role model and why?
My softball role models are Amanda Chidester and Odicci Alexander. I enjoy watching both of those athletes play because of the fire and passion they bring to the game.
Meredith Harwood | IF | Stanfield, N.C.
What are you studying and why did you choose that major?
I am majoring in biology because I want to become an eye doctor. I want to attend optometry school, ideally at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
What is your most interesting hobby and how did you get started? Do you have a favorite memory with the hobby?
Aside from softball, I love to play tennis. I started playing in high school and my favorite memory is winning the conference championship with my doubles partner.
Have you traveled internationally, where was it? Was it a school trip? Do you have a favorite memory from the trip?
Not yet, but I am going on a mission trip to Honduras this summer and I am super excited to go.
Who is your softball role model and why?
My biggest role model from softball is Marisa Runyon. She played at Alabama alongside Haley McCleney and Jackie Traina and I grew up watching Runyon and wanting to be like her one day.
Who has been a major role model in your life and why?
My grandfather has been a major role model for me. Although I never got to meet him, I have been told so many stories about him from my family and so many others from my hometown who had him as a coach and a teacher. I have been told how I am so much like him and the stories that I have heard about him inspire me to be like him.
