Daija Jackson led UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball hitters for nine kills and four blocks as the Spartans dropped a Saturday evening Southern Conference (SoCon) contest to Furman, 3-0 (27-25, 26-24, 25-22).
How it Happened
The Spartans broke a 5-5 tie early in the first set with a 6-1 rally to claim an 11-6 lead. UNCG posted three pairs of points to extend their lead, 17-9, for its largest lead of the set. UNCG extended its lead to 21-14, but Furman countered with a five-point rally to cut the lead down to two. The Paladins continued their broader rally, extending to 13-4, closing the set scoring six of the last eight-point to claim the first set 27-25.
UNCG opened the second set with a four-point rally as both sides engaged in back-and-forth play. The Spartans held a 7-4 lead, but Furman countered with a 6-1 rally to force a Spartans' timeout. UNCG responded out of the timeout with a five-point rally to reclaim a three-point lead. Both sides traded three-point rallies with the Spartans still holding the advantage, 16-13. UNCG extended its lead, 21-16, to five points before the Paladins mustered a 3-1 rally to cut the lead down to the three points. A
Jocelyn Carter kill brought UNCG closer to claiming the second set, 23-19. Furman posted a 7-1 rally to erase the lead and claim the second set.
Furman opened the third set with a 4-1 advantage, but the Spartans posted a four-point rally to claim the lead, 5-4. Both sides posted three tied scores until the Spartans reclaimed the lead with a three-point rally, 10-7. Both teams traded small rallies as the Spartans held onto the lead, 16-13, past the midpoint of the set. The Paladins responded with a 4-1 rally to even the score, 17-17. Mya Wood to reclaim a two-point lead. Furman countered, posting a final 8-3 rally to close the set and win the match.
