GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team welcomed the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for a Southern Conference (SoCon) match ending with the Mocs heading home with a 1-0 win over the Spartans.
UNCG celebrated its four seniors
Maddy Gilhool,
Gabi Santora,
Eliza Radoll, and
Ciani Ricks before the game.
How it Happened:
An even match-up between Chattanooga and UNCG left the first half with a score line of zeros. Both teams had their opportunities, each tallying five shots in the first half. Chattanooga had one of the more dangerous opportunities when after some bobbling in the box, the Mocs had a shot from six yards out. The two shots on goal from the Spartans came from
Parker Sikora and
Gabi Santora who both took solid strikes from distance to test the Chattanooga goalkeeper.
The second half saw more of the same back-and-forth action. The Spartans had possession much of the half and continued to apply lots of pressure to the Chattanooga back line. The tie was broken in the 63rd minute when the Mocs had a corner kick get sent in which UNCG goalkeeper
Abby Buchholz came out to snag. The ball redirected the wrong way and just crossed over the Spartan goal line, giving the Mocs the lead and the eventual win, 1-0.
This win is Chattanooga's first win over the Spartans since 2005.

From Head Coach Michael Coll
"Chattanooga is a good team and beat us on a simple corner kick which was very disappointing because we knew that is a big strength of theirs and how they score a large percentage of their goals. We have to find a bit of a different identity because the hardworking and gritty style that lots of SoCon teams play with is proving to be too much for us to counteract right now! We played some nice soccer in our build up play many times today, but a nice style isn't enough if we aren't dangerous or competitive enough in our opponents' penalty area sadly. We'll make some necessary lineup and tactical changes this week to get ready for tough SoCon road games at Western Carolina and ETSU this week."
Up Next:
The Spartans will continue its SoCon schedule, as they head to Cullowhee, North Carolina, to take on Western Carolina University on Friday, October 7
th, with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
