Hackett Scores Late to Tie Mercer 1-1 in Regular Season Finale

MACON, Ga. – A late goal by sophomore Ally Hackett tied the game at one against Mercer with 32 seconds remaining to conclude the Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season on Sunday afternoon at Betts Stadium.

The game-tying goal was Hackett's first of her collegiate career.

From Hackett
"We knew it was going to be a battle playing a tough Mercer team at its home field, especially with a lot on the line for the tournament. To score and help my team out was just the icing on the cake. I am so proud of how this team grinded until the very end, and we are excited for the tournament to start this week."

How it Happened:
Both teams took to the pitch with their eyes on a win. The Bears were on the hunt for the number one seed and the Spartans could climb as high as the number two seed, all with assistance of the other games. The Spartans had a great opportunity in the first 15 minutes when freshman Ava Kiss received a ball that split the Bears' backline but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity as Mercer's goalkeeper charged out to make the save. Late in the half, a Mercer forward went to volley the ball late inside the 18-yard box, and sent it wide as the Spartan defense had continuous high pressure throughout the first half.

Another opportunity came midway in the second half as the Spartans worked the ball up along the left flank. Maddy Gilhool struck the ball at the top of the 18-yard box but was denied by the Mercer goalkeeper. The Bears countered quickly and forced Emma Malone to come out as a Mercer forward attempted to beat her in a one-on-one.

With 12 minutes left in the game, Mercer striker Nicole Icen took a shot and Malone got a hand on the ball but had a misdirection which led to Keelin Pray putting it in, giving Mercer a 1-0 lead. With the clock at 89:28, Gabi Santora lofted in the Spartans' fourth corner kick of the game from the right and with the box packed, Hackett jumped just a bit higher than everyone else to head the ball to the back of the net for a final score of 1-1.

By the Numbers:
  • Hackett tallied her first-collegiate goal.
  • Santora recorded her fifth assist of the season.\
  • Both teams had 13 shots.
