GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack as the Spartans claimed a Friday night Southern Conference (SoCon) contest over The Citadel, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20).
How it Happened
The highly competitive first set opened with nine ties and two lead changes as the Spartans took a 15-14 advantage into the media timeout. The Citadel came out of the timeout with a four-point rally that forced a UNCG timeout. The Spartans broke the rally with a pair of points capped by a kill from Gabriela McHugh to cut the Bulldogs' lead to one point, 18-17. The Citadel posted two more points to regain a three-point lead and force UNCG's final timeout. The Spartans responded with a three-point rally fueled by two Taylor Robertson kills to force a timeout for The Citadel. That rally extended to five-points as the Spartans claimed the lead, 22-20. The Citadel responded with a three-point rally, but the Spartans closed with a three-point rally with two service aces from McHugh to claim the set.
Both sides traded rallies to start the second set as the Spartans claimed an early 7-5 lead. UNCG extended their lead to four, 14-10, as the Spartans mounted a 4-1 rally where Daija Jackson posted a pair of kills. The Citadel responded with a 5-2 rally to cut the Spartans' lead down to one. UNCG responded with a 7-1 rally that featured two blocks from Mya Wood as the Spartans' lead extended to six, 21-15. The Citadel took five of the next eight points, but a kill from McHugh ended the set as the Spartans held a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Sierra Herndon opened the third set with two kills and one block assist as the Spartans claimed an 8-5 lead early in the set after a 5-1 Spartans rally. After The Citadel broke the rally, UNCG mounted a new 6-2 rally to extend the advantage, 14-8. The Spartans lead grew as large as seven, 18-11, and later extended to eight points, 21-13, on Wood's solo block. The Citadel produced a 4-1 rally in response to cut the lead to five. The Bulldogs later cut the lead down to four points, 23-19, but the Spartans claimed two of the next three points to win the match.
