Men’s Golf Leads Grandover Collegiate After Round 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro's (UNCG) Noah Connor and Symon Balbin currently stand in the top five of the field as the Spartans hold a 13-shot lead over the field at the Grandover Collegiate at the par-72, 6,800-yard Grandover Resort & Spa West Course with second round play suspended due to darkness.
 
Connor conquered the front nine, going out four-under-par (32) thanks to a string of five birdies to open his first round. The senior closed out the front nine with three-straight birdies on the sixth, seventh, and eighth holes. The seventh hole proved to be the second-toughest holes throughout the first two rounds. Connor went through his first trip through the back nine with seven pars and a birdie on the par-four, 345-yard 17th hole to capture a first round score of four-under-par (68). Connor fired two birdies and an eagle on the front side in his second round effort. The senior eagled the par-five, 520-yard sixth hole. Connor posted a three-under-par effort on the front nine's par five holes, adding a birdie on the 565-yard second hole. He continued his birdie barrage into the back nine, posting birdie on the par-four, 330-yard 13th hole. Connor currently stands in second place at eight-under-par with three holes remaining in his second round.
 
Symon Balbin opened his first round four-under-par (68) thanks to a string of birdies on the final three holes of the back nine. The senior's birdie on the par-four, 410-yard 18th hole capped the run that helped Balbin boast a three-under-par (33) back nine score. Balbin conquered his first hole on the sixth hole by capturing an eagle on the way to a one-under-par (35) score on the front nine. Starting the second round of the third hole, Balbin went unblemished into the back nine with two birdies on the sixth and eighth holes. The senior posted back-to-back birdies on the 12th hole and the 13th to gain momentum in his second round. Balbin stands in third place at three-under-par for the tournament with four holes left in his second round.
 
Nick Lyerly opened his first round with birdies on the opening two holes to power the graduate student to a one-under-par (35) open. Lyerly's three-straight birdie stretch came on the par-three 15th, par-five 16th, and the par-four 17th hole to cap a first round with five birdies and a first round final score of three-under-par (69). Lyerly posted three birdies in the second round and stands in a tie for 16th at one-under-par with three holes in his second round
 
Randall Hudson joined Lyerly with a first round three-under-par effort thanks to a five-birdie effort. The junior posted three birdies one the back nine, including both par five holes (the 12th and 17th). Hudson finished his first round with a birdie on the par-four, 360-yard first hole. Hudson posted a second round two-over-par score with three birdies through 14 holes before darkness suspended play.
 
Connor Brown posted a two-over-par (74) in the first round, carding three birdies in the first round. The sophomore catapulted up the leaderboard in the second round as Brown posted four birdies in five holes on the back nine. Brown started his streak on the tenth hole, leaping into the top ten on the leaderboard with five holes remaining. The sophomore carded his seventh birdie of the second round on the 17th holes before play was suspended with Brown needing to play three more holes.
 
Competing as an individual, Tommy Lamb carded four birdies in his first round one-under-par effort (71). The junior posted birdies on the fifth and six holes on the front side, going out one-under-par (35). Lamb carded two birdies on the back nine with a birdie on the par-four, 410-yard tenth hole and the par-four, 330-yard 13th. Boyce produced a string of three birdies in four holes on the back nine in his second round with birdies on the 10th, 12th, and 13th holes before play was suspended.
 
UNCG fired a 13-under-par (275) to claim a nine-shot lead through the first round. The Spartans currently stand ten-under-par in the second round with a 13-shot lead over second place Davidson.

The Grandover Collegiate resumes at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow with the completion of the second round, followed by the final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
