ETSU Bounces Back for 2-1 Win Over Women’s Soccer

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team squared off with East Tennessee State University (ETSU) for another Southern Conference (SoCon) match up that saw a final score of 2-1 in favor of the Buccaneers.

An early goal from junior Parker Sikora gave the Spartans the lead. The physical match between the two sides saw a total of 24 fouls and five yellow cards between the two teams.

How it Happened:
The Spartans wasted no time in the beginning of the game as freshman Sophie Joly charged up the left side of the field and found the feet of Sikora. Sikora was able to pass her defender, drive with the ball to the top of the 18-yard box, and blast a shot into the upper 90, giving the Spartans the lead less than four minutes into the match. ETSU answered ten minutes later as a leading pass was put in from Grace Eatz of ETSU and Momoko Horiuchi was there to put it in. The match was tied by halftime, 1-1.

Most of the play from the first half took place in the middle of the field. Hard tackles, short passes, and strong dribbling from both teams made it an even playing field.

The second half resembled the first in its physical nature. Lots of play in the middle of the field showed two teams fighting to get control of this tied game. The Buccaneers were able to break the deadlock early on, however with a shot from Emma Arnold who found the inside of the front post which deflected in to take a 2-1 lead for ETSU. The Spartans were not going to go down quietly and had a few goal scoring opportunities late in the game, three of which were in the last two minutes. Unfortunately for the Spartans their last push was too late and ETSU would walk away with the win and a final score of 2-1.

By the Numbers:
  • Parker Sikora scored the second goal of her career.
  • Sophie Joly tallied her second assist of the season.
  • Abby Buchholz made two saves during the game.
  • Momoko Horiuchi and Emma Arnold scored for ETSU.
  • ETSU's Shu Ohba made three saves.
Records:
UNCG: 5-7-2, 1-3-1 SoCon
ETSU: 5-5-3, 3-2-1 SoCon
