UNCG Athletics Hall of Fame
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) athletics department will induct eight former student-athletes and a coach into the Athletics Hall of Fame on January 28, 2023. This will mark the 17
th class in program history.
"I am excited that we will be inducting a Hall of Fame class for the first time since 2016," stated Director of Athletics Brian Mackin. "Their contribution to UNCG athletics and the Greensboro community will be duly recognized and honored."
This year's Hall of Fame induction luncheon ceremony will be held in Cone Ballroom on the UNCG campus. Additionally, the inductees will be recognized at the men's basketball game, Sunday, January 29, when the Spartans host Furman at the Greensboro Coliseum at 3 p.m.
This class includes:
- Mike Gaski, the first head baseball coach at UNCG, whose teams won more than 650 games in 22 seasons and reached the NCAA Regionals in 1994 and 1997.
- Ryan Gordon '04, who in 2003 became the first UNCG baseball player to earn First Team All-America honors, batting a team-record .416.
- Nicky Yelverton '97 (formerly Phillips), a First Team All-Big South and All-Big South Tournament selection and a baseball team batting leader.
- Ashley Schnell '12, a standout in cross country and track and field, who won multiple Southern Conference championships.
- Ryan Fox '81, who competed two seasons in men's golf and won the 1981 NCAA Division III individual championship.
- Jenny Gleason '03, who was a four-time All-Southern Conference performer in women's golf and competed on the LPGA Tour.
- Hilmar Bjornsson '92, who was a national assist leader in men's soccer for teams competing in Divisions II and I.
- Tracie Foels '92, a pivotal leader in the first four seasons of women's soccer at the university, 1988-91.
- Daren Burns '08, the most decorated wrestler at UNCG, winning four Southern Conference titles and reaching the NCAAs four times.
"This Hall of Fame class is filled with statistical leaders, conference champions, NCAA qualifiers; and a National Champion!" exclaimed Selection Committee Chair Cathy Roberts '73. "I'm so excited for this class. They truly embody the spirit of the Spartan."
