Volleyball Falls on Road to Western Carolina, 3-0

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Daija Jackson and Mya Wood of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team led the Spartans Wednesday night with seven kills, as Western Carolina took a three-set sweep in Southern Conference (SoCon) play with set scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-21.

How it Happened
The Catamounts scored the first two points of the match, and the Spartans came within one, 2-3, but Western Carolina broke open the frame with a 5-1 run, 8-3. Western Carolina continued to run with the set, as UNCG would only be able to pick up one point each time, except for two-straight points that cut the deficit to six, 11-17. The two points came from a kill by Jocelyn Carter and a block by Carter and Elayne Grisbee. An 8-2 run for the Catamounts finished off the frame for a 25-13 win.
 
Both UNCG and Western Carolina saw its best hitting percentages in the second set, as the Spartans averaged .258 and the Catamounts hit .412. UNCG tied the score at two, for the first tied score of the match. The Catamounts held the advantage for the rest of the frame, including when Destinee Dorsey was serving for nine-straight points, 21-10. UNCG scored five points, but Western Carolina ultimately came out on top 25-15.
 
The Spartans saw its first lead of the match in the third set, including a seven-point advantage, 14-7 and 15-8. The Catamounts utilized a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead, 18-17. UNCG tied the set three more times, 20-20, before Western Carolina finished the match behind a 5-1 run, 25-21.

  • Jackson and Wood each had seven kills to lead the Spartans.
  • Gabriela McHugh tallied 17 assists along with eight digs.
  • Carter led the team with two blocks and added three kills.
