CONWAY, S.C. – Hugh Knapp was a winner at No. 3 singles to lead the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team during a 6-1 setback to Coastal Carolina Friday afternoon.
Knapp displayed lots of grit in rebounding from a 6-1 loss in the first set to claim the match, 6-2, 6-3. It was one of four singles matches that were decided in three sets. Despite the overall score, the match was a closely contested one as UNCG made Coastal Carolina earn the decision.
Falling in three set singles matches were
Alexander Zuckerman at No. 2,
Roger Rogowski at No. 4, and
David Flisberg at No. 5. Zuckerman won the first set, 6-0. Rogowski captured the second set, 6-2.
"It was a great battle today against a very good team," UNCG head men's tennis coach
Jeff Trivette said. "We're starting to see who we could become. It was great for Hugh to battle back and get a win."
Flisberg's match ended in heartbreak as he won a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7) to force a decisive third set. Unfortunately, he lost the tiebreak in the third set, 7-6 (5).
Coastal Carolina opened the contest by capturing the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles by 6-1 and 6-2, respectively.
UNCG returns to action Saturday when it battles another Sun Belt Conference opponent in Georgia Southern. That match begins at 11 a.m.
