WILMINGTON, N.C. – After a recent series of tough matches that didn't end in its favor, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team knew it was a matter of time before rediscovering its winning groove.
That moment happened Saturday when the Spartans sprinted past Fairfield, 5-2, in a non-conference match played at UNCW. It was strong display of resiliency by the Spartans who dropped the doubles point and headed into the singles matches needing to win four of the six contests.
UNCG won five.
Nico Grewe's victory at No. 1 singles led the way for UNCG. Also earning winning decisions were Andrew Zuckerman (No. 2 singles),
Hugh Knapp (No. 3),
Roger Rogowski (No. 4) and
Cooper Wyett (No. 6).
"Singles was an absolute battle with the conditions, but our team came out with more heart than them and ran with it all the way through," Grewe said. "It's always good to gets wins especially on the road. Our work is starting to show but this is just the beginning of the show."
After winning a first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (6), Rogowski cruised to a 6-2 decision in the second set. Wyett displayed tremendous heart after falling 6-3 in the first set. He battled back to win the hard-fought match, 7-6 (6) and 10-8.
Zuckerman also prevailed in three sets. He lost the first set 6-3 before winning the next two sets by 6-4 and 6-2 scores. Grewe cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 straight sets victory.
"Our team had to adjust to difficult conditions with the wind and court speed today," Rogowski said. "Staying positive and using each other as motivation was pivotal in our success today. It's a great feeling to see the hard work in practice translate to our match. We'll be looking to use this as momentum going into our next matches."
The Spartans return home to host Gardner Webb on Friday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.
