GREENSBORO, N.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dropped the final game of the two-game series with the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 7-6, on Tuesday night.
Mitchell Smith got the Spartans on board in the second inning with a solo home run to left-field to cut the Bulldog's lead to one, 2-1.
Greg Hardison tied the game with a sacrifice fly to score
Pres Cavenaugh in the third inning.
UNCG wouldn't score again until the fifth inning with a double from Smith to bring Hardison across the plate.
Rowan Watt brought the Spartans within one again in the bottom of the sixth. Watt hit a single through the left side to bring
Matt Kemp and
Collin Fowler home.
Gardner-Webb added a security run in the seventh inning, 7-5. The Spartans loaded the bases with a single from
Brett Kelly, a walk from Cavenaugh, and Hardison being intentionally waked.
Smith was hit by a pitch to score Kelly. The Bulldogs struck out the final three Spartans to win 7-6.
Zack Mallia earned his first career start on the mound. He pitched 3.1 innings and struck out three batters.
Alex Hoppe,
Price King, and
Hunter Shuey also made an appearance. Hoppe and Shuey pitched 2.2 innings and struck out a combined nine batters.
