GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following an impressive weekend at the plate, UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball pitchers
Morgan Scott and
Reese Byrd had notable performances Wednesday night during a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Radford.
Scott had a career day as she struck out 16 at the plate, allowed just three hits and no walks in the Spartans' second shutout of the season winning 4-0.
The junior retired 13-straight, from the last out of the third to the end of the game.
Byrd also showed out as she sat down a season-best seven batters, as UNCG defeated Radford 4-3.
The freshman had her own stretch, where she retired seven-straight from the start of the game to the top of the third and then another 11 from the end of the fourth to the final out of the game. She allowed just three hits, three runs and one walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- With one out in the bottom of the second, Brooklynn Maxwell reached on a fielder's choice and Samantha Lagrama's double to right center drove Maxwell around for the first run of the game.
- Rallying on two outs in the bottom of the third, Grace Loftin was hit by a pitch and Jordan Gontram walked.
- Maxwell hit her first triple of the season to right field on a 1-1 count, extending the lead to 3-0.
- With runners on the corners, Shipley drove the ball bringing home Maxwell for the fourth run of the game.
NOTES
- Maxwell went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
- Lagrama and Jessie Shipley went 1-for-2 with an RBI each.
- Four Spartans were hit by a pitch.
- UNCG leads the series 34-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNCG got on board first with a two-run homer from Makenna Matthijs, just clearing the left field foul pole in the bottom of the first.
- The Highlanders responded with two runs in the top of the third and one in the top of the fourth for their first lead on the day.
- The 3-2 advantage for Radford was short lived, as UNCG's Blayke Batten crushed a two-run home run to left center with Matthijs on base to take back the lead, 4-3.
NOTES
- Matthijs went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk.
- Batten went 1-for-2 with one run scored, two RBI, and a walk.
- Loftin, Maxwell, and Shipley each had a hit.
- Batten crushed her ninth home run of the season, 11th in her career.
- This was Matthijs' eighth home run of the season, 34th of her career.
