Southern Conference announces softball weekly honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball senior
Delaney Cumbie was named Southern Conference (SoCon) Player of the Week, announced by the Conference on Monday.
This is the third-straight recognition for the Spartans this season.
Jordan Gontram won the honor on Feb. 21 and
Blayke Batten earned the award on Feb. 28.
Cumbie started and played in all five games this week catching for the Spartans. UNCG went 3-2 this week, with two wins over Penn State and a victory over UConn.
The Dunn, North Carolina native led UNCG with a .429 batting average this week, as the Spartans went 3-2. She also led the team in hits (7), home runs (3), total bases (17), slugging percentage (1.063), and on-base percentage (.524).
Cumbie launched her first home run of the season in a 12-4 10-inning loss to No. 12/15 Oregon to tie the game at four in the eighth inning. She also launched a home run in each of the wins against Penn State in the Carolina Classic.
Behind the plate, Cumbie had a .970 fielding percentage, giving up just one error in the five games. She also threw out one runner on the four chances.
She is currently among the top 10 in the SoCon in 10 categories. Cumbie leads the way in on-base percentage (.554), runs scored (.15), hit-by-pitch (6). Cumbie is second in batting average (.395) and slugging percentage (.658), fourth in walks (10), sacrifice flies (2), sixth in putouts (73) and caught stealing by (3), seventh in chances (81).
The Spartans are now 12-6 overall and have launched a home run in 16 of the 18 games played. The Spartans are eighth in the nation averaging 1.67 homers per game.

UNCG returns to Greensboro for a six-game homestand, where the Spartans kick off the week with Boston College on Tuesday, March 8 with a first pitch at 4:00 p.m. The Spartans will then host its third home tournament of the season, starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday. Michigan State, Delaware State, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Elon will travel to UNCG Softball Stadium.
