GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-2 decision to Elon in a non-conference match at Barber Park Thursday night.
The match concluded an unusual day in which players on both sides had to make adjustments. UNCG was originally scheduled to host Elon at 6 p.m. They warmed up at UNCG before a brief shower made the courts slippery and unsafe.
Luckily, Barber Park was available, and the indoor facility was a perfect venue for this late-night battle between neighboring schools.
UNCG head coach
Jeff Trivette and his seniors
Hugh Knapp,
Roger Rogowski,
Cooper Wyett, and
Nico Grewe posed for photos before the intense match started at 7:30 p.m. It was the final home match for the quartet.
Earning victories for the Spartans were
Roger Rogowski at No. 4 singles and
David Flisberg at No. 6 singles. Rogowski prevailed in a tight match, 6-4, 7-6 (6-4). It was Rogowski's third straight victory and his ninth this season.
In earning his fifth victory of the season, Flisberg was also pushed to the limit as he rallied after dropping the first set, 6-4 to win 6-2, 6-4.
The contest started with the six singles matches.
Grewe played in perhaps the match of the night even though he fell short in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5. In the first set, Grewe lost the tiebreak, 14-12, to Elon's Kyle Frankel in a thrilling back-and-forth showcase of excellence between both athletes. Each player made tough shots during the long rally that had fans riveted.
In the second set, Grewe fought back from a 4-2 deficit to grab a 5-4 lead. Knapp also dropped a three-set heartbreaker.
