UNCG Finishes Second At SoCon Championships

GREENSBORO, Ga. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's golf team finished second overall at the 2022 Southern Conference championship tournament. The Spartans shot a final round 279 Sunday afternoon.

This is the sixth time in program history that the Spartans have placed second overall and its ninth time finishing among the top two teams. UNCG won titles in 2015, 2018, and 2019.

The Spartans finished the weekend with an overall score of 844, which was 19 strokes behind SoCon champion ETSU, which was ranked 30th overall in the country entering the weekend.

UNCG graduate student Nick Lyerly shined during the final round as he shot a seven-under 65 to lead the Spartans. Lyerly rebounded from a rough first round to finish second overall with a tournament score of 206.

For Lyerly, this is his third time in his career in which he enjoyed a top two finish individually. Lyerly improved his score in each round as he shot a even-par 72 in the first round and a three-under 69 in the second round.

ETSU's Remi Chartier was the individual tournament winner with a 198, which was a SoCon tournament record for lowest three-round championship score.

Quotable
UNCG head coach Terrance Stewart on UNCG's effort.
"The guys did great and had a very good tournament. ETSU played phenomenal. We went 20-2 against the conference this year and 1-2 against ETSU. The guys did great. It was a good tournament to go against the SoCon, which is a great golf league. Super year and the guys played well. ETSU just played great.

Lyerly on his round of 65
"It feels really good, and I finally putted well for the first time in about four months. The putter was working today, and I made a slight adjustment after the round yesterday. Apparently, that was the right thing to do. I hit the ball well today. Remy was 10 shots ahead of me and the odds of catching him were pretty slim. I came out today with the thought process that if I can get off to a hot start and he bogeys, you never know. He came out of the gate hot too. It was a great round of golf for both of us and it was great to play with him today. It's fun to be in a group like that when you're both playing well. It's almost like you're feeding off each other."

Final Word
Balbin on his eagle.
"It was pretty cool. Off the tee, it was a downwind, downhill and I figured I'd tee it up and hit it as hard as I could. I probably hit the longest drive of my life. I drained the putt and that was really it. That eagle helped my round."
