GREENSBORO, N.C. – With a 1-2 count, the bases loaded, and no outs in the bottom of the fifth, graduate student
Jordan Gontram sent a long fly ball over the left center wall to walk off with a 10-0 victory in five innings over Furman Saturday afternoon during game two.
This was Gontram's third-career grand slam and fourth for UNCG this season. It was her 50
th-career homer, marking just the second time in program history that a UNCG player has hit 50 homers. She sits in second place in career records.
With her home run, UNCG has now totaled 89 on the year, two shy of breaking the single-season record of 90, which was set last season.
Prior to the homer,
Makenna Matthijs hit her sixth-career triple to clear the bases in the bottom of the third for a 6-0 advantage. Matthijs went 5-for-7 in the two games.
UNCG's other three runs came in the bottom of the first.
The Spartans fell to the Paladins in game one 5-3.
Gontram on being the second player in UNCG history to hit 50 homers
"Being just the second player at UNCG history to hit 50 homers is pretty cool, especially doing it with a grand slam to end the game. I know I probably don't hit half that many without Coach
Bethaney Wells working with me all these years, so I definitely give a lot of credit to her. I had been frustrated about my day offensively going into that at bat, but really was just looking to hit it hard, get my teammates across the plate, and walk it off. I had fouled some off and then got one heavy on the plate and was able to send it over the fence so it was definitely a good feeling being able to end the day on a high note!"

Gontram on the games overall
"The first game we definitely were not solid on any side of the game. Between games we talked about the loss only being a bad thing if we didn't learn from it and make adjustments for the second game. We felt confident that we had the next one and that we were going to be fine and could still control the series. Early on in the second game, I think we still didn't really feel like ourselves but finally got it going offensively about halfway through."
