GREENSBORO, N.C. – Once a team has a goal in mind, it is hard to deter them from that vision.
In a tough 10-5 loss to the Charlotte 49ers, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team did not disappoint in its final home regular-season game of 2022. Records were broken.
Graduate student
Jordan Gontram hit her third-straight home run in as many games. This homer was her 18
th of the season, which broke the previous record of 17, held by Marisa Sholtes in 2019, Katelyn Bedwell in 2014, and Lindsay Thomas in 2013.
With her 52
nd career home run, Gontram pushed it over the edge and also assisted in breaking the UNCG single-season homer record. The previous record was 90, held by last years' team.
Gontram's two-run blast in the bottom of the first was the team's 91
st home run and sophomore
Brooklynn Maxwell's solo bomb in the bottom of the sixth made it 92.
Jordan on breaking two records with one swing
"It's always fun hitting home runs, but hitting one and breaking two records at once takes it up a notch! Doing it at home made it even more special. Last year we hit 90 home runs and obviously wanted to beat that this year. As this season progressed and that number kept climbing, we started to have the mindset of okay we got 90 last year, let's go for triple digits this year.
Brooklynn on adding a homer to the count
"I was just thinking to see the ball up and the first pitch I got was down the middle so I decided to go after it. Being a part of such a big home run hitting team is so much fun and surpassing the record from last year is awesome but I knew we had the potential to do so from the first week of the season!"
