DURHAM, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team dropped a non-conference defensive battle against No. 2 Duke, 3-1, Sunday evening at Koskinen Stadium. This was the first road contest for the Spartans.
The Spartan's defense stood strong, as the Blue Devils outshot UNCG 22-2 and had 12 corners in the game. Out of the two chances for UNCG, one came from senior
Maddy Gilhool, who scored the sixth goal of her career, and first of the season to tie the game in the first half.
Senior Eliza Radoll on the game
"Coming into the game, we knew it was going to be tough and a grind, but the attitude was right. As soon as we stepped onto the field, we were excited, wanted to have fun, and enjoy the moment. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for this team to play Duke, we knew our roles and I feel like we executed our plan for the most part. Credits to Duke for putting the ball in the back of the net when we did slip up but I would expect nothing less from the number two team in the nation."
How it Happened:
- 4:31 – UNCG was called for the game's first foul inside the box, giving the Blue Devils a penalty kick opportunity. Maggie Graham slipped the ball to the right of Abby Buchholz for an early 1-0 advantage.
- 34:27 – With back-to-back fouls on Duke, UNCG moved the ball quickly down the field and Hannah Morton took the set piece about 25 yards out. Sophie Joly took the initial shot that was saved, before Gilhool pushed the ball over the line in the scramble to tie the game.
- 44:59 – Following an initial shot by Michelle Cooper, the Blue Devils put the ball back and Julia Burnell headed it to the back left post for a 2-1 lead right before the horn for halftime.
- 69:43 – Off the Blue Devils' ninth corner kick of the game, Makenzie Pluck found Graham who put away her second goal of the game heading it home for a 3-1 lead.
By the Numbers:
- Senior Abby Buchholz recorded four saves in net.
- Freshman Emma Malone made her first-collegiate appearance in net during the second half and had two saves.
- Duke had nine shots on goal compared to UNCG's two.
Records:
- UNCG: 1-1-0, 0-0-0 SoCon
- Duke: 2-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC
Radoll with takeaways from the game
"Going forward I couldn't be more excited for this team, after this match we have a new standard which we'll bring to every opponent and I'm confident we'll have great success. It's a blessing to be on a team that wants to play soccer the proper way and have fun doing it. This team is my family and I'm so excited to have the rest of the season with them and show everyone what we can accomplish."
