Gilhool Scores Game Winner in Shutout Over Liberty, 1-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Maddy Gilhool scored her second goal in as many games, giving the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team its first shutout of the season, a 1-0 victory over Liberty University Thursday night.

With the win at home, UNCG is now 2-0 at home and 7-3 against the Flames all-time.

By the Numbers:
  • Senior goalkeeper Abby Buchholz made five saves in her sixth shutout of her career.
  • Gilhool scored her seventh goal of her career, second of the season.
  • Gabi Santora registered her eighth-career helper, and first of the season.
  • This was the first shutout since the Spartans' 1-0 victory over Western Carolina to conclude the regular season on October 24, 2021.
How it Happened:
  • 52:06 – UNCG had its first corner kick of the game in the 53rd minute, where Santora sent an inswinger inside the six-yard box and Gilhool redirected it with her head past the goalkeeper who was looking to punch the ball out.
Records:
  • UNCG: 2-1-0, 0-0-0 SoCon
  • Liberty: 1-1-1, 0-0-0 ASUN
Head Coach Michael Coll on the game
"We are happy to get the win especially with our first shutout of the season. Liberty are a very strong program and they definitely made it difficult for us. We had to fix some things at halftime because the first half was quite poor from our standards. The second half was better, and the goal was quite good after great service and a nice headed finish on the corner kick. We should've scored more than one goal tonight and moving ahead we need to take advantage of what we create to try to make some separation between us and our opponents. Our next game versus VCU on the road this Sunday will be very difficult because they are a quality team and we know we've got to be much cleaner in possession to get the result we want versus VCU."

Up Next
The Spartans jump on the bus for their second road trip of the season, facing VCU on Sunday, August 28 with a start time of 6:30 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia.
