Volleyball Falls in Chucktown Throwdown Opener to Montana

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior Taylor Robertson posted a team-high ten kills as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team dropped a Friday afternoon contest to Montana, 3-0, with set scores 26-24, 25-19, and 29-27 in the Chucktown Throwdown.

Both sides played a tight first set with no lead surpassing three points throughout the set. The Grizzlies posted a 13-10 advantage in the middle of the set before UNCG posted a 5-1 rally to claim a 15-14 lead. Both sides struggled to grow a lead beyond two points up to the first set point. A Jocelyn Carter kill tied the set, 24-24, to fight off the Grizzlies' first set point before Montana posted a two-point rally to earn the first-set victory. The Grizzlies posted a .317 hitting percentage compared to the Spartans' .253.

The Spartans countered the Grizzlies' early 5-1 second-set rally with a 6-3 rally of their own to cut the deficit to one point, 8-7. UNCG would get within three points of the Grizzlies nine times in the remainder of the set as Montana won the set with their largest lead, six points.

Each side engaged in tight competition early in the third set with the score tied, 7-7. Montana followed with a five-point rally to claim the lead. Sierra Herndon's kill sparked the Spartans' counter where UNCG posted seven of the next eight points. After two lead changes, Montana mounted a four-point rally to break a 15-15 tie. The Spartans shrunk the Grizzlies' advantage down to two points, 20-18, before Montana reclaimed a four-point lead leading to set point. UNCG clawed back with a four-point rally to break set point and force two Montana time outs. Both sides traded set points up to a 27-27 deadlocked score where Montana mounted the final rally to seal the win.
