No. 23 Men’s Soccer Records Third Shutout Over Winthrop

GREENSBORO, N.C. - There was no stopping the No. 23 UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team, as they went head-to-head with Winthrop University. The Spartans shut out the Eagles 2-0 at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Saturday night in non-conference play.

This was the Spartans' third clean sheet of the season.

How it Happened:
In the seventh minute, Ngando went on an attacking run up the middle and right when Winthrop thought he was about to take the shot, the sophomore fed freshman Maddox Mallery. Mallery found the back of the net with ease, giving him his second goal of the season and Ngando his fifth assist in seven games. The Spartan's offense, while putting up an impressive showing with ten shots on goal in the first half alone, were not the only pieces of the machine to be working. The Spartan's defense allowed no shots and corners in the first half. Fifth-year Marco Milanese alongside freshman Sami Lachekar and junior Emmanuel Hagan all proving to be a solid wall that Winthrop simply could not break down.

The second half showed much of the same domination by UNCG as they put up another eight shots, one of which coming from Basile Marc who, despite being pressured from two of the Eagle's backline, got a dangerous shot off, forcing the Winthrop goalkeeper to make the save. Just when the game was nearing its final whistle, the UNCG backline lofted a ball towards the feet of Ngando. After a picture-perfect touch in the 87th minute, Ngando took one more towards the net before being taken down from behind. A penalty kick was awarded and Ngando was the one up for the task. He placed the ball down and with all the composure of a seasoned athlete, tucked the ball neatly into the lower left corner of the net, solidifying the Spartan's win.

By the Number:
  • Mallery scored his second-collegiate goal in the eighth minute of play.
  • Spartan's out shot Winthrop 18-4.
  • Ngando tallied his seventh-career goal and first tally off a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
  • The Spartans had six shots on goal verses Winthrop's one.
Quote from Head Coach Chris Rich
"We had a good performance tonight. We controlled the majority of the game, creating many high-level chances and not giving up many for Winthrop.

The only thing missing was our execution in front of goal. That's something we need to improve on moving forward as we want to put games away when we have the opportunity. Teams will always have belief when games remain 1-0, so tonight we had to deal with some adversity in the second half, but the guys dealt with it well.

Winning college soccer games is never easy, and tonight was no exception, so we're happy to get back to winning ways. We are also happy to get our second consecutive clean sheet."
