BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The No. 18 UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team dropped its first contest of the season to in-state rival Campbell University during a mid-week battle, 1-0.
The Spartans are also ranked No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches South poll, No. 12 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll, and No. 15 in the College Soccer News poll.
Head Coach Chris Rich on the game
"This was an NCAA tournament-level game, and unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of it tonight. Campbell is a top team, very well coached, so we knew tonight would be difficult. I thought Campbell was on the front foot early on and had the better of it in the first half."
How it Happened:
As the two teams settled into play during the first half, UNCG was called twice for being offsides. The Spartans also had a shot by
J.C. Ngando saved in the 21
st minute of play, but the Camels countered with their first shot on goal by Kemy Amiche that found the back of the net. Amiche scored on a breakaway at 22:18 with a through ball from Tyler Young for a 1-0 advantage. Campbell then held possession for most of the remaining time, getting off three shots and its two corner kicks.
After an initial shot by the Camels at the start of the second half, UNCG tallied five shots in six minutes, as three of them were stopped by Edu Rodriguez between the posts. The Spartans had some great shots on goal, including one in the 61
st minute of play, where UNCG set up for a free kick and
Marco Milanese headed the ball on target. Rodriguez covered ground with his diving stab to keep the shutout. UNCG encroached the 18-yard box with no sense of defeat taking a few more chances and causing scrambles, but the Camels' defense fended off any attacks in the final minutes of play.
Coach Rich on making adjustments after halftime
"We made some tactical adjustments at half-time by changing our defensive structure and I think that helped us. We were able to press better which allowed us to get on the ball more. Overall, I thought we were very good in the second half, and the guys left everything out there. We had many opportunities to equalize but unfortunately didn't execute in front of the goal.
"This is going to be a huge learning moment for us. But just how we don't get too high on our highs, we will not get too low on our lows. Next game mentality, and we have a big one next week at Louisville."
By the Numbers:
- Campbell and UNCG each had nine shots.
- Junior goalkeeper Niclas Wild made two saves.
- The Spartans also had four corner kicks to the Camels two.
- Campbell was called for 14 fouls, as UNCG was called for seven.
Records:
- UNCG: 5-1-2, 0-0-0 SoCon
- Campbell: 4-2-2, 0-0-0 Big South
