HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team came from behind to win 2-1 against Triad foe High Point University Thursday night at Vert Stadium.
This was the first win over the Panthers since September 3, 2018 when the Spartans won 4-0 at UNCG Stadium.
How it Happened:
After a slow start for the Spartans and a goal from the Panthers in the 18th minute by Sam Gerhart, UNCG picked up the pace and ended the half outshooting High Point 12-8.
Nineteen minutes after the Panther's goal, the Spartans'
Maddy Gilhool connected for her third goal of the season.
Parker Sikora fed her the ball from a throw in and after one touch, Gilhool sent it past the diving keeper at 36:55.
UNCG stepped it up another notch and took a 2-1 lead after
Caroline Woods crossed the ball into the 18-yard box and
Hannah Morton headed it home at 43:18.
During the second half, UNCG had the only corner kicks outplaying High Point again to hold on for the win.
By the Numbers:
- Senior
Abby Buchholz made four saves.
- The Spartans outshot the Panthers 21-13.
- Gilhool scored her third goal of the season and eighth of her career.
- Morton tallied her first-collegiate goal.
- Woods recorded her first assist of the season, second of her career.
Quote from Gilhool
"After they scored, I feel like a fire was lit under us. We started to pass the ball around and switch the field, which was hard for them to defend. I think the midfield and offense really connected tonight. We both were running on and off the ball which got us into scoring opportunities."
Records:
- UNCG: 3-2-1, 0-0-0 SoCon
- High Point: 0-5-2, 0-0-0 Big South
