Sikora Connects in 2-1 Loss to Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team battled to a 2-1 loss in Spartanburg against Wofford in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Five minutes into the game the Spartans had an early opportunity when freshman Bailey Gourdine dribbled past the defense for a shot that was punched away by Wofford's goalkeeper. UNCG and Wofford settled into back-and-forth play for the rest of the first half to end with a 0-0 score.

Both teams picked up the intensity going into the second half. In the 63rd minute, UNCG found themselves with a free kick outside of the 18-yard box. Sophomore Rachel Poplin set up to take the kick, aiming for her teammates inside the six-yard box. Parker Sikora found herself in the back of the box to head the ball into the net for the Spartans to take the lead, 1-0.

After a shot by Wofford's Millie Murphy, Ines Obradovac found the rebound to shoot it into the left side of the net to even the score 1-1. With less than one minute remaining in the match Saachi Bureau sealed the win for the Terriers, knocking the ball into the far corner of the net.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Spartans and Terriers both had 12 shots.
  • Wofford had four corner kicks to UNCG's two.
  • Sikora tallied her first goal of the season and third of her career.
