PALM CITY, Fla. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's golf graduate student
Nick Lyerly collected his eighth career individual victory as the Spartans finished the 54-hole tournament in second place Tuesday afternoon at the Spartans' Advance Golf Partners Collegiate at Hammond Creek Golf Club.
Lyerly posted a three-under-par (69) to win the tournament by seven strokes with a 54-hole total of 12-under-par (204). The graduate student recovered after an opening hole bogey with birdies in two of the next three holes on the par five, 504-yard second hole and the par four, 400-yard fourth. Lyerly holed out on the par four, 412-yard seventh hole to collect his second eagle of the tournament and finish the front nine at three-under-par (33). Lyerly completed the back nine unblemished at even par to claim the individual title.
Connor Brown posted the second-best scorecard for the Spartans on Wednesday with an even-par (72) final round score. The sophomore carded five birdies with three coming on par five holes including both par fives on the back nine. Brown opened the round with a birdie on the par-four, 443-yard third hole that proved to be the third-hardest hole in the tournament. Finishing his round on the second hole, Brown carded a birdie to finish the front side at one-under-par (35).
Randall Hudson claimed a top-25 finish after a two-over-par (74) final round finish, placing in a tie for 24th place. The junior carded his lone birdie of the day on the par four, 454-yard 11th hole. Hudson finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of five-under-par (221), just two strokes away from a top-15 finish.
Competing as an individual,
Noah Connor's one-over-par (217) 54-hole total was the lowest among individual-only golfers. The senior placed 12th after a one-over-par (73) final round. Connor's two birdies came on par five holes with his first one the second and the final on his closing hole, the par five, 555-yard 17th.
The Spartans finished second with a tournament total of two-over-par (866). UNCG posted a final round one-over-par (289) scorecard and finished three strokes behind Drexel. The Spartans were three shots behind third place DePaul and seven strokes behind Butler in fourth place.
