GREENSBORO, N.C. – After an impressive 4-0 weekend at home, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will host Campbell in a mid-week contest with a start time of 5 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.  
 
The Spartans then host UConn, Delaware, and Indiana in the UNCG Invitational from Saturday, February 24 to Sunday, February 26. This will be their second of three tournaments hosted at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
 
All softball regular season home games are free admission.
 
LAST TIME OUT

• The Spartans went 4-0 this weekend at their own Spiro Classic with two wins over Morehead State and two victories over UNCW.
• In UNCG's final game of the tournament against UNCW, Maddie Spell earned her second win of the season, tossing 5.0 innings.
• She gave up just four hits and one run with no earned runs.
• Maycin Brown went 2-for-3.
• Delaney Cumbie and Brookynn Maxwell each had two RBI.
• Samantha Lagrama went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

QUICK SPARTAN HITS

• Cumbie was named SoCon Player of the Week during the first week of play, following the Spartans' 3-2 start in Florida.
• Spell was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week during the second week of play, going 2-0 in the circle.
• Jorde Chartrand leads the Spartans with a .529 batting average.
• Maycin Brown, who is one of four Spartans with a .300 or higher batting average, leads the team with 15 RBI and five home runs.
• Chartrand also leads UNCG with 19 total strikeouts in the circle after pitching 17.0 innings thus far.
• Spell and Rhyann Jones are 2-0 in the circle.
• Nationally, the Spartans are: 12th in walks, 19th in doubles (17), 29th in slugging percentage (0.518), 33rd in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.71), 34th in doubles per game (1.70), 34th in home runs per game (1.10), 38th in on base percentage (0.411), 38th in scoring (6.30),
• UNCG is leading the conference in batting average, doubl plays per game, doubles, doubles per game, on base percentage, scoring, shutouts, slugging percentage, and walks.
• Among the nation, Brown is fourth in home runs, 10th in home runs per game, 11th in RBI, 17th in total bases, 20th in RBI, 43rd in slugging percentage.

 
PRESEASON PRESENTS
UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll.

Fifth year Cumbie was selected to the Preseason All-SoCon first team. Cumbie was named to the All-SoCon first team and SoCon All-Tournament Team. She earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
 
Senior Maycin Brown was voted to the Preseason All-SoCon first team. Brown was named to the All-SoCon first team. She was named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week, SoCon Player of the Week, and SoCon Player of the Month last season.
 
Sophomore Loftin was tabbed to the Preseason All-SoCon first team. Loftin was on the All-SoCon first team and freshman team. She was also voted to the NFCA Extra Inning Softball All-Freshman Team and All-Mideast second team. She was also selected as a Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Top 25 finalist.
 
Fifth year Samantha Lagrama was named to the Preseason All-SoCon second team. Lagrama was named to the All-SoCon second team.

FRESH FACES
Head Coach Janelle Breneman welcomed seven additions to the 2023 roster, including freshmen Rylie Williams, Salem Ward, Rhyann Jones, and Kiley McQuillan.
 
She also added redshirt sophomore Maddie Spell, who transferred from George Washington, junior Jaden Cheek who transferred from Clemson, and sophomore Jorde Chartrand who transferred from Central Arkansas.
 
DEPTH IN RETURNERS
Thirteen Spartans are listed on the roster from last year's team, including seven that started in 20 or more of the 57 games played in 2022.
 
Last season the Spartans saw three players bat above .300. Two of the three are returning, including offensive leader Brown who led the team with a .329 batting average. Cumbie was second on the team with a .303 batting average.  

Cumbie and Brooklynn Maxwell return, as two of UNCG's five that were ranked in the top 100 in individual stat categories. Cumbie was fourth in hit-by-pitch per game (0.42), 40th in home runs (16), 47th in home runs per game (0.30), 63rd in runs per game (0.91), 82nd in on-base percentage (0.473). Maxwell was 21st in toughest-to-strikeout (23.3).
 
SCOUTING CAMPBELL

• Last season, the Fighting Camels went 37-19 overall, including a 21-6 Big South record.
• Campbell was pitched to finish third in the Big South Preseason Poll.
• Campbell returns 15 from last year's squad who have experience after earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
• The Fighting Camels split games at the Carolina Classic this past weekend, defeating Delaware, 3-2, and ETSU, 9-3.
• They fell to Western Kentucky, 3-0, and South Carolina, 2-1.
• Makayla McClain was named Big South Freshman of the Week. She batted .400, going 6-for-15, scoring five runs, two RBI, a triple, and three stolen bases.
• McClain is leading Campbell with eight RBI and a .333 batting average.
• Allyiah Swiney was named Big South Freshman of the Week the first week of play, after batting .357 in four games at the Charlotte Invitational.
• In the circle, Isabella Smith has thrown 37.2 innings this season with a 4-2 record.
• In the nation, the Fighting Camels are 19th in triples per game, 44th in stolen bases per game.

• UNCG leads the series 28-21.
• The Fighting Camels outlasted the Spartans on April 20, 2022 in 11 innings, 5-4.

SCOUTING UCONN

• UConn was voted to finish third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll.
• The Huskies are coming off a BIG EAST regular season title last season, finishing with a 20-4 conference mark and a 38-18 overall record.
• They return two all-conference players in sophomore Lexi Hastings and junior Jana Sanden.
• Grace Jenkins was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after leading the Huskies with four RBI, .471 batting average, and a .500 on base percentage.
• Savannah Ring is leading the team with a .429 batting average.
• Jenkins is leading the team with nine RBI and four home runs.
• In the circle, Hope Jenkins has tossed 21.0 innings earning a 1-1 record with one save.
• Meghan O'Neil is 2-0 in the circle.
• In the nation, UConn is 39th in stolen bases per game. They are leading the conference in doubles, doubles per game, stolen bases per game, and win loss percentage.

HISTORY VS. UCONN

• UConn and UNCG last met on March 4, 2022 in the Carolina Classic.
• The Spartans won 6-2.

SCOUTING DELAWARE

• Delaware won the 2022 CAA Regular Season Championship with an 11-4 conference mark and a 29-16 overall record.
• The Blue Hens were selected to finish second in the 2023 CAA Softball Preseason Poll.
• They bring back 15 returners from last year's team.
• The Blue Hens are on a five-game losing streak, most recently losing to George Washington, 3-0.
• Katie Scheivert has earned her second-straight CAA Rookie of the Week honor.
• Scheivert is leading the team with a .417 batting average and has stolen five bases successfully.
• Emily Winburn was also named CAA Pitcher of the Week. She is 2-3 in the circle tossing 29.0 innings.
• Kendall Shank is 2-0 in the circle with 11.0 innings thrown.
• Kiara Mills has a team-best seven RBI.
• Among the nation, the Blue Hens are 21st in fielding percentage. They are leading the conference in batting average, fielding percentage, on base percentage, stolen bases per game, and walks.

• UNCG leads the series 5-3.
• The Spartans won the last matchup, 6-5 on Match 10, 2019.

 
 SCOUTING INDIANA

• Indiana was 27-22 at the conclusion of the 2022 season with a 10-13 conference record.
• Senior utility player Cora Bassett was ranked No. 68 in D100 Preseason Top 100 Player rankings by the D1Softball organization.
• Brooke Benson is leading the team with seven RBI.
• Heather Johnson is 1-5 in the circle throwing 18.1 innings.
• Macy Montgomery and Brianna Copeland have the other wins for the Hoosiers.
• In the nation, Indiana is 20th in double plays per game, which also leads the conference.
