ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's golf graduate student
Nick Lyerly earned third place while the Spartans finished fourth after the final round of The Johnnie-O at Sea Island, taking place at Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course.
Lyerly fired an unblemished two-under-par (68) with nine pars on the entire front nine. The graduate student's two birdies came on the back nine on some of the longer holes on the course. Lyerly produced a birdie on the par five, 565-yard 15th hole, representing one of five Spartans that birdied the hole on the final round. The graduate student also birdied the par four, 470-yard 18th hole. Lyerly's under-par effort moved him two spots up the leaderboard to a third-place finish with a three-under-par (207) 54-hole total. Among one of five golfers to shoot 68 or better in the final round, Lyerly was four shots off second place.
Competing as an individual,
Noah Connor jumped one spot on the leaderboard into a tie for ninth place after shooting a final round one-over-par (71). The senior tied for the best individual-only finish in the tournament with a 54-hole total of one-over-par (211). Connor opened his round with a birdie on the 15th hole and then added a birdie on the par four, 415-yard second hole. The senior shook off two bogeys with back-to-back birdies on the par three, 179-yard sixth hole and the par four, 582-yard seventh.
Tommy Lamb recorded the Spartans' second-lowest round on the day with an even-par (70) scorecard. The junior carded birdies on the par four 407-yard 16th hole and the sixth hole near his closing hole. Lamb posted a four-over-par (214) 54-hole total, good for a tie for 22nd place.
Randall Hudson finished the tournament tied for 18th with a 54-hole total of three-over-par (213) after shooting three-over-par (73) in his final round. The junior posted both of his birdies on the 11th and 15th holes.
The Spartans claimed fourth with a 54-hole total of eight-over-par (848) after a second consecutive round at three-over-par (283). UNCG finished two shots behind Cincinnati and Ohio State in a tie for second.
