NCAA Clemson Regional Guide
 
CLEMSON, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team returns to Clemson, South Carolina for the second time this season, this time for postseason play.
 
The Spartans will battle the 16-seeded and host team the Clemson Tigers in the first game of the Clemson Regional. Cal State Fullerton and Auburn will face off in the second game of the regional later on Friday evening. The winner of both games will play on Saturday, May 20 at 1:00 p.m. The losers of the games on Friday will play at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
 
UNCG (37-20, 13-4 SoCon) is coming off winning the 2023 Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament Championship and earning the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. This was the Spartans' third SoCon Championship in six years, winning in 2021 and 2018. It is the seventh title in program history, winning four Big South trophies. UNCG also won its sixth-straight SoCon Regular Season title.
 
Clemson (46-9, 18-6 ACC) fell in the semifinal round of the ACC Tournament to Duke on Friday, May 12, 2-0. The Tigers were selected as the 16 seed of the NCAA Tournament and earned their third bid to the tournament. This is the second-straight season that Clemson has hosted a regional.
 
LAST TIME OUT

• UNCG played an absolute nailbiter of a SoCon Tournament by first defeating the fourth-seeded Western Carolina, 1-0.
• The Spartans then defeated the second-seeded Samford 2-1 in nine innings and then walked off with the title against the Bulldogs 7-6.
• Jessie Shipley tied the championship game with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
• Maycin Brown walked off with her own solo homer following Shipley for the victory.
• Maddie Spell, Jessie Shipley, and Delaney Cumbie were named to the All-Tournament Team.
• Spell was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while Ashley Gontram earned the Pinnacle award, given to the student-athlete from the championship team with the highest GPA.

 
SPARK OF SHUTOUTS

• UNCG has had 11 shutouts this season.
• This is the most since the 2018 season when the Spartans had 14.
• Six of the 11 have been shortened games.

• Delaney Cumbie was named SoCon Player of the Week (February 13 & March 6)
• Chartrand also was named SoCon Player of the Week (April 17 & May 8)
• Spell was voted SoCon Pitcher of the Week (February 20 & April 3)
• Jones was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week (March 20)

 
POSTSEASON AWARDS

• UNCG's Janelle Breneman, in her 11th season, won her fourth SoCon Coach of the Year Award.
• Four other Spartans garnered All-SoCon first team honors, including Rhyann Jones, Brooklynn Maxwell, Grace Loftin, and Jorde Chartrand.
• Jones also was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team.
• Chartrand, most recently, earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Mideast Region second team honors.
   

SPARTAN QUICK HITS

• Chartrand leads the Spartans with a .343 batting average.
• Jessie Shipley paces the Spartans with 38 RBI.
• Chartrand also leads UNCG with 82 total strikeouts in the circle after pitching 103.2 innings thus far.
• Brooklynn Maxwell is leading the team with 58 hits and six stolen bases, and is second with a .335 batting average.
• Grace Loftin and Cumbie lead the team with 14 doubles, while Maxwell has 13.
• Maycin Brown and Shipley lead UNCG with 11 home runs each.  
• Jones is 11-2 in the circle and leads the team with a 2.35 ERA.
• Maddie Spell has 12 wins (12-5) and has tossed a team-best 124.1 innings.
• UNCG has outscored opponents 294-192 this season.

SPARTAN SOCON RANKINGS

• UNCG leads the conference in 10 categories including: double plays per game, doubles, doubles per game, home runs per game, on base percentage, scoring, shutouts, slugging percentage, win-loss percentage, and walks.

NATIONAL RANKINGS FOR UNCG

• UNCG has led the nation in walks since April 6th. The Spartans have totaled 261 walks this season which is a new UNCG record for single season walks.  
• The Spartans are 18th in the nation with 0.46 double plays per game.
• They are 16th in total home runs (68) and 23rd in home runs per game (1.19).
• UNCG is 46th in doubles (74), 48th in shutouts (11), 54th in scoring (5.16) and win-loss percentage (0.649), 57th in slugging percentage (0.446), and 66th in on-base percentage (0.369).
• Delaney Cumbie is third nationally in walks per game (0.95), while Samantha Lagrama joins her in the top 30 and is 26th in walks per game (0.70).
• Cumbie is 34th in on-base percentage (0.502) and 58th in runs per game (0.89).
• Spell is 58th nationally in walks allowed per seven innings (1.35).
• Chartrand is 30th nationally with four saves.
• Shipley is 66th nationally with four sacrifice flies.

SCOUTING CLEMSON

• No. 10/10 Clemson has outscored opponents 331-88 in games this season, including run-ruling 15 opponents.
• The Tigers' pitching staff is posting a 1.33 ERA through 352 innings of work and have struck out a combined 300 batters.
• Clemson is 5-2 in NCAA Regional appearances after being the No. 2 seed in the Tuscaloosa Regional in 2021 with a 2-2 record and going a perfect 3-0 in 2022.
• Valerie Cagle, a 2023 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top Three Finalist, is dominant for the Tigers in the circle and at the plate.
• On the rubber, she maintains a 1.20 ERA and a 23-5 record with three saves in 169.0 innings tossed.
• She also leads the team with a .465 batting average, 14 doubles, 18 home runs, and 53 RBI.
• Cagle was named ACC Player of the Year as well as to the All-ACC first team.
• Caroline Jacobsen, Alia Logoleo, Ally Miklesh, and Millie Thompson earned All-ACC third team recognition.
• Clemson is ranked in the top 20 in 12 categories, including: second in earned run average, fourth in fielding percentage, fifth in double plays per game, sixth in win-loss percentage, ninth in walks and strikeout-to-walk ratio, 10th in shutouts, 13th in slugging percentage, 14th in on-base percentage, 16th in home runs per game, and 20th in batting average and doubles.

HISTORY VS. CLEMSON
Clemson leads the all-time series 2-1.

The Spartans played the Tigers twice this season. Clemson won 3-0 on March 10 and 6-1 on March 11 during its own Clemson Classic.
