Penn State Clips Men’s Soccer, 2-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team fell to Penn State, 2-0, on Saturday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in non-conference play.

This was the Spartans' second Big Ten opponent of the season and first time UNCG and Penn State have met in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams took some time to settle into play in the first half, but the Nittany Lions had two early opportunities with shots from Samuel Kpardeh that were both blocked by the Spartans' defense. At 10:03, Penn State's Femi Awodesu was given a red card as he was denying an opportunity for a shot. Freshman Keanan Bader took the free kick, but the Nittany Lions' wall was there for the block.

Late in the frame, UNCG was called for a foul 25 yards out in Penn State's attacking third. Matthew Henderson sent the ball in, and Alex Stevenson got enough of his head on the ball to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 advantage at 35:53.

At 68:42, Bader found space right outside the 18-yard box and struck the ball clipping the right post for one of UNCG's best opportunities of the night. In the 75th minute, Penn State's Quentin Flowers caught up to a long cross inside the box and found the right upper 90 to double its lead, 2-0. The Spartans would have four more shots and three more corner kicks in the remaining minutes but weren't able to find the back of the net.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • UNCG outshot Penn State 17-6.
  • Mathias Balle had two saves.
  • The Spartans had nine corner kicks to the Nittany Lions four.
