Conley Connects, Men’s Soccer Falls to No. 4 West Virginia

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ethan Conley of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team scored his second goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to No. 4 West Virginia at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

The Spartans held the Mountaineers scoreless for 47 minutes, while West Virginia gave up its first goal in 297 minutes of play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Play in the first 10 minutes was back and forth as the Spartans and Mountaineers settled into action. West Virginia had an early corner five minutes into play, but UNCG's defense was prepared. The Spartans' Yoshiya Okawa tallied the first shot on goal of the game at 6:07, while the Mountaineers responded with its own shot on goal at 7:11. Both were saved by the goalkeepers. In the 10th minute, Keanan Bader read the ball all the way in off a corner kick and struck the ball in air into the hands of West Virginia's Lee Jackson in net. Eight of UNCG's 12 total shots and six of its eight total corner kicks came in the first half.

Less than three minutes into the second half, West Virginia found the back of the net. Yutaro Tsukada crossed the ball into the 18-yard box and Marcus Caldeira connected with the pass to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead at 47:54. West Virginia later turned the ball over in the Spartans' attacking third and UNCG took the advantage. UNCG switched the field and Maxwel De-Bodene gave the ball up to Conley who touched the ball once before striking from about 25 yards away for the equalizer at 60:31.

As the intensity picked up, both teams looked for the go-ahead goal. West Virginia came up with the answer, as Tsukada's free kick from the right side of the field fell right at Max Broughton's foot at 80:14 to give the Mountaineers the 2-1 advantage and eventual win.
