Softball & Radford to Battle in Midweek Challenge

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team is set to wrap up a long stretch of home games with a doubleheader against non-conference foe Radford on Wednesday, March 20 at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The first game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.

The Spartans are currently 15-13 overall, while the Highlanders are 13-13 overall.   

All regular season softball home games at the UNCG Softball Stadium are free admission. Concessions will be open and outside food is not permitted. All weekday home games (not including Friday) will be Bark in the Park games, where spectators can bring their dogs.

  • Maxwell is pacing the Spartans with a .444 batting average, 30 RBI, and 10 home runs.
  • Grace Loftin is second on the team with 21 RBI, while Shipley is second with a .382 batting average.
  • Maxwell is pacing the SoCon in batting average, slugging percentage (.929), on-base + slugging percentage (1.442), runs scored (32), hits (44), RBI (30), triples (5), at bats (99), and assists (75).
  • Maxwell is ranked nationally in the top 10 in five categories: second in total bases and triples, fourth in hits, and eighth in slugging percentage and triples per game.   
  • Jessie Shipley is 10th in the nation with 11 doubles.
  • The Spartans are 12th in the nation in walks (110), 15th in home runs per game (1.36), 39th in slugging percentage (0.494), 42nd in triples per game (0.29), and 43rd in double plays per game (0.43).
  • Rhyann Jones paces the pitching staff with 36 strikeouts, while Salem Ward is second with 30 strikeouts.
  • Maddie Spell has tossed 55.1 innings this season with 26 strikeouts and leads the staff with a 7-5 record.
  • Maddie Spell was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 26), while Anna White was named SoCon Player of the Week (Feb. 26).
  • On March 11, Brooklynn Maxwell was named SoCon Player of the Week and Salem Ward was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish first in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received four first-place votes.
  • Senior Brooklynn Maxwell, redshirt-junior Maddie Spell, and junior Jorde Chartrand were named to the SoCon Preseason first team.
  • Junior Grace Loftin and sophomore Rhyann Jones were named to the SoCon Preseason second team.
  • UNCG won its sixth-straight SoCon Regular Season title in 2023.
  • The Spartans won their third SoCon Tournament Championship in route to the program's seventh NCAA Tournament bid.
  • This was their third ticket to the NCAA Tournament in six years.
  • Maycin Brown and Blayke Batten return for their fifth year in the Blue & Gold.
  • UNCG added five freshmen and one transfer to the 2024 roster.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG is coming off a 6-4 loss to in-state foe Appalachian State that was played on March 13 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
  • Maxwell went 2-for-4 with one run scored, one RBI, and a double.
  • Loftin went 2-for-3 with one run scored, one RBI, one walk, and a homer.
  • Madelyn McKinnon hit her first-collegiate home run in the game and went 1-for-3 at the plate.
  • Reese Byrd had two strikeouts, while Ward had three in the circle.
RUNDOWN ON THE HIGHLANDERS
  • The Highlanders are hosting University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday before traveling to Greensboro.
  • Radford was voted to finish seventh in the Big South.
  • Lexie Roberts and Abby Wilson were voted to the Preseason All-Conference team.
  • Radford swept SoCon foe Western Carolina with scores of 1-0 and 3-1 on March 5.
  • Lexie Roberts is leading the way with a .390 batting average, while Wilson and Cassi Barbato each are swinging .329 at the plate.
  • Three Highlanders have totaled double figure RBI, including Wilson with 18, Rachel Smith and Barbato each have 16.
  • Roberts has gone 13-for-13 in stolen bases this season and is 45th nationally.
  • In the circle, Morgan Cooper has tossed 55.1 innings, while Abby Peace has tallied 49.1 innings.
  • Cooper is leading the way with 31 strikeouts and Peace is second with 28.
  • Peace is nationally ranked fourth with four saves.  
  • Nationally, the Highlanders are 44th in stolen bases (42) and 48th in stolen bases per game (1.62).

UP NEXT 
The Spartans will hit the road to face their first SoCon foe this weekend. UNCG will take on ETSU on Saturday, March 23 for a doubleheader in Johnson City, Tennessee at Betty Basler Field with a first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m., and then play a single game on Sunday, March 24 at 1:00 p.m.
