GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 7-0 in a non-conference game that marked the conclusion of the regular season on Saturday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Spartans are now 33-19 and finished with a 15-6 record in The Southern Conference (SoCon). UNCG earned the top seed for the SoCon Tournament and at least a share of their third SoCon Regular Season Championship on Friday with Wofford beating Samford, 8-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jake Armsey opened the scoring in favor of USC Upstate by lifting a three-run home run out to right in the second inning. After one more run scored via a wild pitch later in the inning, Upstate carried a 4-0 lead.
UNCG threatened to score its first run in the fourth when
Luke Holland tripled off the wall in center. However, Upstate stranded Holland 90 feet from scoring to end the inning.
USC Upstate extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth when Grant Sherrod singled to left to score Jace Rinehart.
Daniel Gernon capped the scoring for USC Upstate when he singled up the middle during the top of the eighth inning to score a pair, making it 7-0.
Caleb Cozart and
Jacob Budzik reached on a single and hit by pitch, respectively, during a rally in the bottom of the ninth, but were each stranded to end the game, 7-0.

The Spartans earned the top seed for the SoCon Tournament in Greenville, S.C., and will play their first game on Friday, May 24 at 9 a.m. against a SoCon foe. The opponent will be determined by outcomes during the first two days of the tournament on Wednesday and Thursday.
