SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team took down the Wofford Terriers in straight sets on Thursday night (29-27, 25-17, 26-24) in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in the SoCon. The last time UNCG captured five SoCon wins was in the 2021 season as that squad went 12-4 in conference play.
The last time UNCG defeated Wofford was in 2021 as the Spartans earned both regular season meetings with the Terriers that year.
In addition, the victory over the Terriers improves UNCG's winning streak to three. The last time the Spartans posted three-straight wins was in 2021 as that team closed out the regular season with a four-match winning streak.
Tonight's straight-set victory over Wofford marks the second one for the Spartans this season. The last time UNCG collected two 3-0 wins in the SoCon was in the 2022 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Terriers gained the early momentum in the match by starting things off with a 6-2 lead over the Spartans. Wofford maintained the lead until late in the set. With Wofford in control, 21-15, a kill from
Allie Sweet began a 6-0 Spartan run to tie things at 21-21. The remainder of the frame was a point-for-point duel with both clubs seeking a two-point lead to get the set. Finally with the set tied at 27-27, a kill from Sweet following a set-point service ace from
Chloe Nussbaum, the Spartans secured the first frame, 29-27.
Set 2 – The Blue & Gold continued their momentum into the second set, securing three unanswered points to begin the game to never allow the Terriers to lead in the set. The Spartans led by as much as nine in the frame. With UNCG in control, 23-17, a kill from
McKenna Timmerman followed by a Wofford attack error, the Spartans claimed the second set, 25-17.
Set 3 – The final set stayed a little closer, tying nine total times. However, UNCG never allowed Wofford to take the lead. With the Spartans holding a 23-20 advantage, the Terriers posted three consecutive points to tie things up. Both teams tussled back and forth until a kill from Sweet, followed by an attack error from Wofford granted UNCG with the 26-24 third set for the 3-0 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sweet registered her 15th career double-double and 10th of the season after leading the match with 14 kills and adding 11 digs.
- Robin Rosser notched 11 kills, while Timmerman added 10 kills.
- Gabby Seeds led the match with 29 assists.
- Seeds, Timmerman and Rosser collected two service aces apiece.
- Nussbaum notched 10 digs.
