No. 23 Men’s Soccer Upsets No. 5 High Point, 2-0 at Home

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 23 UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team took down Triad rival and fifth ranked team in the nation High Point, 2-0, Wednesday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Seth Wilson and the Spartan defense held the 14th best scoring offense in the nation scoreless in UNCG's highest ranked home win since Sept. 21, 2021, when they upset No. 2 Clemson, 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Spartans started the match aggressively, taking five shots within the first 20 minutes of action. In the 21st minute, a deep run from Enzo Dovlo forced the defense to collapse on him. Dovlo then crossed the ball into the box for a waiting Arnaud Tattevin who put the shot into the back of the net to give UNCG the 1-0 lead. High Point only mustered two shots for the remainder of the half, which were saved by Wilson. In the 39th minute, Head Coach Chris Rich brought forwards Pablo Torre and Colton Sessoms into the match to keep the energy up and rest the starters. The subs sparked offense right before halftime with 44:07 on the clock. Torre blitzed by the Panthers' defense and passed the ball to Dovlo who was swarmed by the High Point backline. Dovlo then heel kicked the ball to a streaking Sessoms who buried a shot to the lower left corner to give the Spartans a decisive 2-0 lead before halftime. This was Sessoms' first goal since 2023.

The second half saw a renewed High Point offense as they tried to chip into the lead, taking nine shots in the half. However, the Spartan defense held strong as Wilson saved three shots in the half to equal his career-high with five saves in total to end the match 2-0.  This is UNCG's highest ranked home win since No. 2 Clemson in 2021 and highest ranked clean sheet since No. 15 Wake Forest in 2024.
