JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team fell in a five-set thriller (25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 14-25, 5-15) against the ETSU Buccaneers on Thursday night in Johnson City, Tennessee, at Brooks Gymnasium in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The first frame went back-and-forth in the early goings. However, with ETSU on top, 14-13, the Spartans notched a 5-1 run to take an 18-15 lead and maintain the advantage for the remainder of the game. UNCG closed out set one with three unanswered points to take it, 25-20.
Set 2 – ETSU took an early 5-2 lead in set two, but UNCG responded with a 4-1 run to knot the game at six. The second set was a point-for-point duel seeing 10 tied scores and five lead changes. ETSU turned on the jets late in the set. With UNCG holding a one-point advantage, 18-17, the Bucs posted an 8-2 run to walk away with set two, 25-20.
Set 3 – The third set was another all-out battle between the Spartans and Bucs. With ETSU leading, 12-9, the Spartans sparked a 12-2 run to take a 21-14 advantage over the Bucs. However, ETSU bounced back with an 8-1 run to tie the game, 22-22. Both teams exchanged a point before back-to-back
Allie Sweet kills secured the third set for UNCG, 25-23.
Set 4 – ETSU picked up the momentum in the fourth set, getting out to an early 11-4 lead over UNCG to never allow the Spartans to lead in the stanza. The Bucs were able to take the fourth game, 25-14, to push a fifth set.
Set 5 – A
Robin Rosser kill put the Spartans on board first in the final set before ETSU took off with a 9-1 run and never looked back. The Bucs secured the fifth frame, 15-5, for the 3-2 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sweet registered her 20th career double-double and 15th of the season after leading the match with 16 kills and adding 11 digs.
- Gabby Seeds posted her ninth career double-double and seventh of the season, leading the contest with 43 digs and chipping in 14 digs.
- McKenna Timmerman and Rosser added 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
- Chloe Nussbaum led UNCG with 21 digs.
- Graylinn Serge added 13 digs.
- Sweet and Nussbaum collected two service aces apiece.
- Rosser and Connore' Siler-Nixon added two blocks each.
