Elon Edges Men’s Basketball in Overtime, 92-90

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team fell to Triad foe Elon, 92-90, in overtime at the newly named Bodford Arena, formerly Fleming Gymnasium, on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Six Spartans reached double figures, including Donald Whitehead Jr. (18), KJ Younger (16), Clinton Efinda (14), Justin Neely (13), Domas Kauzonas (12) and Lilian Marville (10). Neely also added 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and eighth of his career.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neely made the first basket of the game, a second-chance layup at 18:56, but Elon would not let the Spartans see a lead the rest of the first half. The Spartans kept the deficit in single digits and tied the game four times during the stanza, including the half time score, 44-44, which was concluded with a  three-pointer drained by Efinda.

After free throws made by Elon, Younger made his second three-pointer of the game at 19:03 to put UNCG up one, 47-46. The score toggled back and forth until the Spartans held the advantage for two minutes. A six-point run put the Phoenix up three, 63-60, with 14:49 remaining, but Efinda's three-pointer tied the game, 63-63. UNCG saw its largest lead of five, 80-75, with 5:53 left. Elon saw another stretch of six-straight points for an 81-80 lead. A 6-4 run in favor of the Spartans ended the first half tied, 86-86, as Elon made the final basket.

In overtime, both teams made two free throws to start the period, keeping it tied, 88-88. Elon ultimately won the game after going on a 4-2 run for a 92-90 victory.

  • Neely's 11 rebounds is a season-high and his nine assists is a career-high.
  • Whitehead, Jr. scored a season-high 18 points.
  • Younger's 16 points is a new season-high for the freshman.
  • Efinda scored a career-high 14 points.
  • UNCG had the advantage in field goal percentage, 47.6-40.0, and three-point percentage, 45.2-32.4.
  • Elon outscored UNCG in bench points, 23-21, and points in the paint, 36-24.
