Softball Welcomes Coastal Carolina On Tuesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team continues a seven-game home stretch hosting Sun Belt rival Coastal Carolina for the second game of the season series on Tuesday at UNCG Softball Stadium with a first pitch at 5:00 p.m.

Currently, UNCG is 32-12 overall and 9-3 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) and the Chanticleers are 32-12 overall and 9-6 in the Sun Belt Conference.

The two teams met earlier this season in Conway, South Carolina, at St. John Stadium, where the Chanticleers claimed a 9-1 five-inning victory.

All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG took the series against Samford at home two games to one.
  • The Spartans claimed game one, 3-1, fell by a narrow margin of 6-5 in game two and bounced back with a 5-3 victory on Sunday.
  • With the Sunday win, the two teams have a .750 SoCon win percentage, but UNCG is currently in first due to winning the series.
  • Grace Loftin went 4-for-9 with two runs scored, three RBI, three doubles and 10 putouts this week.
  • Jorde Chartrand pitched 19.2 innings last week with two game starts, a 2-1 record and 12 total strikeouts.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG is nationally ranked in the top 25 (as of April 10) in home runs (9th/66), home runs per game (9th/1.61), RBI (18th/256), slugging percentage (22nd/.555), RBI per game per game (25th/6.24) and total runs (25th/271).
  • Kaylyn Belfield is leading the Spartans with a .426 batting average and has successfully stolen 12-of-14 bases.
  • Belfield is 66th nationally with her hitting clip.
  • Loftin is leading the Spartans with 54 hits, swinging .400 at the plate in 44 games played with a team-high 43 RBI. She also paces the team with 12 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs.
  • Her 51 hits are 57th in the nation and her 40 RBI are 68th.
  • Jessie Shipley and Hadley Gardner are second on the team with nine homers. Chartrand, Macy Michael and Rylie Williams each have seven home runs.
  • Chartrand and Samantha Beck each have nine doubles and are second on the team.
  • Along with Loftin, nine other Spartans have double-figure RBI, with nine totaling 20 or more. Chartrand is second on the team with 32 and Shipley is third with 31 RBI.
  • Salem Ward leads the pitching staff with 80 strikeouts. She is second with a 2.58 ERA and has a 12-4 record with three saves in 28 appearances.
  • Ward is nationally ranked 27th in saves, 46th in victories and 62nd in pitching appearances.
  • Chartrand, in 23 appearances, leads the pitching staff with a 1.94 ERA in 101.0 innings pitched, totaling a 8-5 record and three saves. She has kept opponents to a .213 batting average. Chartrand is 27th in the nation with her three saves.
  • Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
  • Gardner earned SoCon Player of the Week, while Chartrand was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the Spartans' 4-0 weekend at the CSU Round Robin.
  • This season, the Spartans have walked off in six games: vs. Toledo (16-14), Iona (5-3), Fairfield (4-2), Radford (2-1), Wofford (2-1 and 9-8).
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in eight categories, including home runs, home runs per game, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, win/loss percentage and walks.
  • Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.  
  • Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
  • It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
  • It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
  • UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.
RUNDOWN ON COASTAL CAROLINA
  • Coastal Carolina went 34-21 overall in the 2024 season with a 14-10 Sun Belt record.
  • The Chanticleers were voted to finish sixth in the 2025 Sun Belt Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Georgia Hood and Delaney Keith were named to the 2025 Preseason All-Sun Belt Team. Hood earned 2024 All-Sun Belt first team honors along with NFCA All-Region Second Team recognition.
  • Hood is pacing the team with a .435 batting average, swinging 54-for-124 with 27 runs scored and 39 RBI.
  • Keith leads the team with 43 RBI and 17 home runs.
  • Keirstin Roose is a force on the bases, successfully stealing 12-for-13 bases, while Libby Pippin has also stolen 14-for-15 bases this season.
  • Picone was named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week on March 11 after going 2-0 allowing just one earned run over 14.0 innings of work to post a 0.50 ERA.
  • Picone is currently leading the nation with 16 complete games and is seventh with 22 game starts.
  • Hood was named Sun Belt Player of the Week on Feb. 18 for having a .563 batting average, five RBI, three runs, one home run and .588 on base percentage.
  • Nationally, the Chanticleers are ranked in the top 25 in home runs (11th/61) and home runs per game (14th/1.49) (as of April 10).
  • They are leading the Sun Belt in home runs, home runs per game, RBI per game, shutouts, slugging percentage, won/loss percentage and walks.

The Spartans will host SoCon foe ETSU this Friday and Saturday at UNCG Softball Stadium. On Friday the two teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday's single game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
