Softball to Battle Non-Conference Foe Radford on Wednesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will travel up north to face Big South Conference foe Radford in a midweek battle on Wednesday at Radford Softball Stadium with a first pitch slated for 4:00 p.m.

Currently, UNCG is 30-10 overall and 7-2 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) and Radford is 21-19 overall and 7-2 in the Big South. The Spartans defeated the Highlanders on March 19 in Greensboro with a score of 2-1, thanks to a Samantha Beck two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.

Last year, the two teams split a doubleheader in Virginia, with the Spartans taking game one, 3-1, in nine innings and then the Highlanders claiming the win in game two, 4-3.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG is coming off its second SoCon series sweep of the season, claiming three wins against Furman in Greenville with scores of 3-1, 9-4 and 5-2.
  • Grace Loftin led the charge at the plate with a .385 batting average during the series, swinging 4-for-10 with a home run, two runs scored and one RBI. She also had 11 putouts while starting in center field.
  • Jorde Chartrand tossed 9.2 innings against the Paladins, allowing just four hits, two earned runs and struck out six batters. She earned a win and a save in the circle.
  • UNCG totaled six home runs in the three games played against Furman, bringing their season total to 66 homers.
  • The Spartans have now won the last six games against the Paladins, all being regular season games.
RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG is nationally ranked in the top 25 in home runs (7th/66), home runs per game (8th/1.65), RBI (16th/256), slugging percentage (19th/0.564), hits (23rd/344), total runs (23rd/271) and RBI per game (24th/6.40).
  • Kaylyn Belfield is leading the Spartans with a .439 batting average and has successfully stolen 12-of-14 bases.
  • Belfield is 52nd nationally with her hitting clip.
  • Loftin is leading the Spartans with 50 hits, swinging .397 at the plate in 40 games played with a team-high 40 RBI. She also paces the team with nine doubles, three triples and 11 home runs.
  • Her 50 hits are 52nd in the nation and her 40 RBI are 62nd.
  • Jessie Shipley is second on the team with nine homers, while Hadley Gardner has eight homers. Chartrand, Macy Michael and Rylie Williams each have seven home runs.
  • Along with Loftin, Chartrand and Beck each have nine doubles.
  • Along with Loftin, nine other Spartans have double-figure RBI, with eight totaling 20 or more. Chartrand is second on the team with 31 and Shipley is third with 30 RBI. 
  • Salem Ward leads the pitching staff with 79 strikeouts. She is second with a 2.42 ERA and has a 12-3 record with three saves in 26 appearances.
  • Ward is nationally ranked 25th in saves, 43rd in victories and 50th in pitching appearances.
  • Chartrand, in 19 appearances, leads the pitching staff with a 2.24 ERA with a 6-4 record and three saves. She has kept opponents to a .219 batting average.
  • Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
  • Gardner earned SoCon Player of the Week, while Chartrand was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the Spartans' 4-0 weekend at the CSU Round Robin.
  • This season, the Spartans have walked off in six games: vs. Toledo (16-14), Iona (5-3), Fairfield (4-2), Radford (2-1), Wofford (2-1 and 9-8).
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in nine categories, including hits, home runs, home runs per game, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, total runs and win/loss percentage.
  • Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.  
  • Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
  • It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
  • It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
  • UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.
RUNDOWN ON RADFORD
  • Radford finished the 2024 season 24-23 overall and 7-11 in the Big South
  • The Highlanders most recently split a doubleheader to Charleston Southern on Sunday, earning an 8-2 victory and then falling 3-1.
  • Radford was voted to finish sixth in the 2025 Big South Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Morgan Cooper was voted to the 2025 Big South Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Rachel Smith is pacing the team with a .321 batting average, six home runs, 23 RBI, four triples and 24 runs scored.
  • She is also leading the team by successfully stealing 13-of-16 bases.
  • Cassi Barbato has a team-best eight doubles.
  • Barbato and Isabel Harrison are tied for second on the team with 18 RBI.
  • Dakota Redmon is leading the pitching staff with a 2.57 ERA, 14 complete games, 122.2 innings, 88 strikeouts and a 12-6 record.
  • Redmon has kept opponents to a .229 batting average.
  • She is nationally ranked 11th with 13 complete games and 38th with 116.2 innings pitched.
  • Radford is nationally ranked 63rd in stolen bases with 51.

UP NEXT 
The Spartans will host Samford on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series at the UNCG Softball Stadium. Saturday's schedule will include a doubleheader with a first pitch at 1:00 p.m., while there will be a single game on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m.
