Women’s Soccer Dominates in SoCon Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team shut out The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe VMI, 4-0, on Thursday at UNCG Soccer Stadium.  This is the second clean sheet of the season for the Spartans.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans took control of the opening portion of the game, taking six shots in the first 20 minutes of action. In the 26th minute, a miscommunication on the Keydets' defensive line allowed the ball to stray to the feet of Taylor Mentzer, who buried a shot past the keeper to put UNCG up, 1-0. Seizing the momentum, Ryen Ortiz received a headed pass from Azumi Oka in the 32nd minute and swept a shot into the back of the net to extend the score to a 2-0 lead. Rina Ogimoto capped off the first half scoring with a coolly taken penalty kick past the goalkeeper to put UNCG up 3-0 going into halftime.

The Spartan offense did not relent coming out of the break, when in the 57th minute a cross from Ogimoto found Mentzer in the box who headed it past the keeper to bring the score to 4-0. VMI offense tried to respond in the 64th minute with back-to-back shots on goal. However, Emma Malone was up to the task, saving both shots. UNCG then iced the rest of match to bring the score to a 4-0 final.
