Women’s Tennis Begins 2026 Slate with Doubleheader at Virginia; Travels to NC State Sunday

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team will begin the 2026 slate with a doubleheader against the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the Virginia Tennis Complex. 
 
The Spartans will then travel to the Triangle to take on N.C. State on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 3:00 p.m. at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG competed in four tournaments in the 2025 fall slate.
  • UNCG began the fall campaign by hosting the UNCG Tournament from Sept. 13-14 at the UNCG Tennis Courts. Sophia Cedeno led the Spartans by capturing two singles wins on the weekend. Doubles duo Sara Kostic and Kayley Bushnell paced the squad with two doubles victories over the two days.
  • The Spartans also competed at the Elon Tournament from Sept. 19-20 in Elon, North Carolina. Cedeno led the Spartans with two singles wins, while Bushnell captured one singles win in the tournament.
  • UNCG participated in the ITA Chapel Hill Regional from Oct. 16-18 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Lauren Thomson and Cedeno led the Spartans by collecting one singles win apiece in the tournament.
  • The Spartans wrapped up the fall slate at the UNC Wilmington Invitational from Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Bushnell paced the Spartans by capturing three singles wins in the tournament. Kostic and Sofia Somoano led UNCG with two doubles wins across the three-day event. Cedeno and Thomson picked up one doubles win on the weekend.
  • UNCG concluded the 2025 regular season 3-18 overall and 0-7 in The Southern Conference (SoCon).
  • Thomson finished on top for the Spartans in singles for the second consecutive year after tallying eight wins on the 2025 campaign. 
  • Sydney Bly led the team last season with nine total doubles wins.
  • Head Coach Mat Iandolo is in his second season at the helm of the UNCG women's tennis program.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
  • The Cavaliers begin the spring season ranked No. 14 in the ITA Team Rankings.
  • Virginia posted a 22-6 overall record last season and finished tied for third in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
  • Fifth year Melodie Collard returns following a season that saw her, alongside partner Elain Chervinsky, win the NCAA Doubles Championship in the fall.
  • The doubles duo went on to boast a 32-6 doubles record and earned a selection to the All-ACC Doubles First Team.
  • Virginia opened the 2026 spring slate with a 7-0 win over the Richmond Spiders on Tuesday in Charlottesville.
  • In her dual matches debut, freshman Katie Rolls won in straight sets on singles court five.
  • Head Coach Sara O'Leary earned her second-straight ACC Coach of the Year accolade following the 2024-25 season where she guided her team to the first No. 1 ranking in program history and its first ITA National Team Indoor Championship Semifinal appearance.
SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK
  • N.C. State wrapped up the 2025 fall slate at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on Nov. 23, 2025.
  • The 10th ranked doubles team of Gabriella Broadfoot and Victoria Osuigwe captured the NCAA Doubles National Championship with a 6-4, 6-5 victory over fourth-seeded and No. 12 Sophia Webster and Celia-Belle Mohr of Vanderbilt at the USTA National Campus.
  • With the title, Broadfoot and Osuigwe became the youngest national champions in program history.
  • The Wolfpack begin the 2026 season at No. 11 in the ITA Preseason Rankings.
  • N.C. State competed in seven total tournaments in the fall of 2025 including, ITA All-American, ITF W35 San Rafael, ITA Carolina Regional, ITA Sectional Championships, ITF W35 Orlando & W15 Clemson and the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships.
  • The Wolfpack concluded the 2025 spring slate with a 19-7 overall record and 10-2 mark in the ACC.
  • The Wolfpack's 2025 stellar season was concluded with a 4-2 loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the NCAA Championships Super Regional.
  • N.C. State will begin 2026 by hosting a doubleheader with SoCon opponent ETSU and Big South foe Campbell on Saturday. The Wolfpack will host another doubleheader in N.C. Central and UNCG on Sunday.
  • UNCG and N.C. State last met on Feb. 7, 2013, with the Wolfpack taking the 7-0 win in Raleigh.

The Spartans will open their 2026 home slate by hosting UNC Asheville on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 1:00 p.m. at either the UNCG Tennis Courts or the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
