Baseball Falls to No. 18 Kentucky, 13-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell to No. 18 Kentucky, 13-2, on Friday at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans' bats woke up late as they tallied five out of their seven hits in the last three innings of action.

Kentucky's Jaxon Jelkin received the start for opening day, and he made the most of his opportunity. He went four innings with no runs allowed on two hits while fanning 10 UNCG batters. The Wildcats jumped on UNCG starter Noah Chapman early as a triple, and a productive Kentucky groundout to second baseman Brantley Truitt opened the score to 1-0 after the first inning. Chapman found no reprieve in the second frame as Kentucky continued its hot hitting, adding two runs to push the score to 3-0. The Wildcats broke the game open in the third inning, pushing across eight runs on six hits in the top of the third for an 11-0 score. Chapman was relieved by Jake Colucci midway through, but the damage was done as both teams entered the fourth inning.

As the Spartan offense continued to struggle, Ethan Nobles came in to take over pitching duties for UNCG in the top of the fourth. In the freshman's first collegiate appearance he held the high-powered Kentucky offense at bay, going four innings with just one run allowed and two strikeouts. The Wildcats would tack on one run in both the sixth and eighth innings to put the scoreline at 13-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Jacob Budzik led off the bottom half of the frame with a triple that eventually allowed Jake Barbour to drive him in with a single to cut the score to 13-1 heading into the ninth. In the final frame, JJ Parsons came into pinch hit for the Spartans. On a 2-0 count, the catcher blasted a home run over the left field wall for UNCG's first dinger of the season to bring the game to the final score of 13-2.
