Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short to Furman, 63-61

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team came up just short to the Furman Paladins, 63-61, in the Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday afternoon inside Bodford Arena.

Jeni Levine, Tasia Johnson, Jaila Lee, Rylan Moffitt and Mia Simpson were all recognized in a special Senior Day ceremony prior to Saturday's contest against the Paladins.

Makiah Asidanya led the Spartans with 17 points, while Levine followed closely behind with 14 points. Moffitt led the contest by matching her season-best of 14 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG got the scoring started early, getting out to a 13-0 run to begin the contest. The Paladins responded with an 11-2 run to close out the first frame, cutting their deficit to four, 15-11.

Furman started out the second quarter with back-to-back buckets to tie the game at 15-15. The Spartans bounced back with nine unanswered points to regain a nine-point advantage at 5:53, 24-15. Both teams continued to add baskets, but UNCG maintained a steady lead. Asidanya closed out the first half with a triple, sending the Spartans into the locker room with a seven-point lead, 31-24.

The Paladins found their stride coming out of the break to outscore the Spartans, 25-13. With UNCG on top 40-32, Furman tallied a 17-4 run for the visiting team to take the 49-44 lead going to the bench.

Both teams continued to go back-and-forth in the final stanza. A three-point play from Moffitt and two-straight free throws from Levine tied the game back up at 2:47, 57-57. The squads exchanged baskets before Furman's Alyssa Ervin knocked down a triple at 1:36 for a three-point lead, 62-59. With under a minute left, Asidanya went 2-for-3 at the free throw line to make it a one-point game, 62-61. After Furman's Ervin went 1-for-2 at the charity stripe, UNCG was unable to capitalize on its final position to allow the Paladins to secure the 63-61 victory.
