GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team was clipped by Davidson, 7-4, on Tuesday night at Wilson Field. JJ Parsons added his second home run of the season while swiping two bags in the ballgame.
The Spartans struck early in the first inning with the three-hole hitter Jake Mueller driving in two runs to quickly put UNCG up 2-0. Junior Dylan Smith made his second collegiate start for UNCG but ran into trouble early. A two-run home run by Davidson tied the game at two apiece after two frames of action. The Wildcats then added two more runs in the third that knocked Smith out of the game after going two and a third innings. Head Coach Cody Ellis turned to freshman Nolan Winfield, who turned in a strong four innings of work with four strikeouts, a walk and five hits allowed. The Blue & Gold tied the game in the top of the sixth with a Parsons solo shot into left field and Jacob Budzik's RBI single that brought Brantley Truitt across the plate to make it 4-4.
However, two critical fielding errors by UNCG led Davidson to push across two runs in the bottom of the sixth. In the next frame, Davidson batted in another run to push the score to 7-4, which removed the gritty Winfield out of the game. UNCG turned to John Horton, in his debut appearance as a Spartan, closed out the game striking out three of the last five batters faced. The Spartans only got one hit in the last two innings to bring the game to the final score of 7-4.
